The good

  • We've been really impressed with this winter sleeping bag from Snugpak. It certainly keeps you warm and is now my go-to sleeping bag for the colder months.

The not so good

  • Although it does pack down relatively small compared to some other four-season sleepings bags used with car camping, you can fit this one into your backpack, but it will take up a lot of room. If you want to go backpacking, look at some of the more expensive Snugpak sleeping bags.

Our Review

If you want to extend your family's camping season, you need to get some sleeping bags designed for the cooler months.

For the UK Winter, that typically means finding a four-season sleeping bag.

I was lucky enough to see the collection of Snugpak sleeping bags last September. They have some great gear.

Snugpak produces a lot of equipment for the UK Armed Forces and so has a good pedigree in creating reliable equipment.

So when they asked if I'd like to test one for myself, I was interested in their four-season Sleeper Extreme bag.

Why? Well, it's in their entry-level range of sleeping bags and affordable to most families.

It also contains IsoFibre fill, designed not to bunch up or compress so that it loses its insulating properties.

Snugpak Basecamp Sleeper Extreme Review

I like this sleeping bag.

It has a comfort rating down to -7C, which is going to be ideal for most UK winters.

When in its stuff sack, it is no bigger than a typical 2 or 3 season family sleeping bag. Not as small as the more advanced Snugpak sleeping bags intended for backpacking, but not too bulky either when using the car to take the family camping. One thing this bag isn't short of, and that's insulation.

One thing this bag isn't short of, and that's insulation.

After letting the bag uncompress from the stuff sack when I first got it out, it was clear that this sleeping bag had plenty of it.

The hood has loads for instance. When you are in the bag, the hood almost engulfs you.

Here is the view looking out from inside the bag.

In addition to the hood, you can seal the bag up around your shoulders too, which helps retain your body heat inside the bag and not escaping through the hood.

Of course, they have insulation covering the zip too.

Testing in January

The foot area has a box section that made the bag feel comfortable.

I don't like sleeping bags that are too tight, but this felt remarkably comfortable.

Despite it being subzero temperatures the night before, the night I came to test it in January, the weather had warmed up! I was roasting in it!

And bizarrely, I went camping wishing for a cold night so I could test the bag!

Still warm come morning

Fortunately, it did get a lot colder come the morning. However, I remained snug in the Snugpak and even overslept.

We will, of course, take this camping again and give it more testing. If we find anything that contradicts what we've found so far, we shall update this review.

However, for now, I'm confident in giving the Snugpak Basecamp Sleeper Extreme the GOWTK Thumbs Up as a great winter sleeping bag for family camping.
