Here's a simple pizza recipe that's great for kids to help make and cook over the campfire. The pocket pizzas are really easy to make and fun too.

Most kids love pizzas.  These Pocket Pizzas are a simple campfire version that they can help make and cook on the campfire (they could also be cooked on hot BBQ coals).

  • A packet of pita bread
  • 1 can or jar of spaghetti or pizza sauce
  • Grated cheese
  • Optional fillings: sweet corn, pineapple chunks, diced peppers, etc.

All of these ingredients can be brought with you to camp.

It is important to note that the pizzas aren't cooked as such (they are toasted), and so any fillings you choose should be items that are safe to eat raw, i.e. use cooked meats if you want that in your topping - we just stuck with tomato, cheese, sweetcorn, etc.

How to create pocket pizzas

  1. Cut each pita bread in half, creating a pocket.
  2. Add a spoonful of pizza sauce, spreading it evenly around the pocket.
  3. Add the grated cheese and any other fillings.
  4. Wrap in foil.
  5. Place the wrapped pocket over the hot coals of a campfire or suspended above the fire.  Depending on the heat of the fire, you may need two minutes on each side of the pizza.  We recommend you try the first pizza for a minute and then unwrap it to see how well it is doing and judge for yourself.

With supervision, your kids could cook their own pocket pizza over the campfire, using long tongs to place and turn their pizza.

The result should be pita bread that's not burnt, with the sauce heated through and the cheese melted.

If you find your pita bread sticking to the foil, you may want to grease the foil first and place it a bit further away from the heat.
