Have a great family walk at the National Trust’s Dudmaston Estate in Shropshire…
Dudmaston Estate is a National Trust property, with a large lake, forest, gardens, and a late 17th century mansion, known as Dudmaston Hall.
The estate is located near the village of Quatt, which is just outside Bridgnorth on the A442, which runs between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.
This time we visited in November. The main house is closed during the Winter months, as well as the formal gardens, but the walks, park, and excellent tea room is still open (please check the opening times on the National Trust website for the days Dudmaston Estate is open).
With a family we recommend getting a National Trust Family Membership card, which gets you access to places like this up and down the country, as well as free parking at the many National Trust landscapes.
As soon as you enter the estate is the kids play park.
The swinging chairs were a big hit.
There is a picnic area not far from the park, and just outside the tea room (in Summer there’s also an Ice Cream shop).
The picnic tables are in a small orchard.
We thought the wooden signs on the trees that tell you what variety of apple it is, were a great touch.
Dudmaston Estate Walks
If you are not visiting the house, the grounds have some excellent walks.
The map has two colour coded walks with numbers on, and there are corresponding wooden posts around the walk, with matching colours and numbers – very easy to follow so you won’t get lost. Let one of your kids navigate.
This is a great walk to take the kids on: stepping stones, bridge, woods, rocks, fields, crossing a dam, and a huge lake with stunning views.
The walk can be muddy, so take the right gear.
Here’s a video journal we made of the walk to give you an idea of what to expect.
