National Go Canoeing Week – Give paddling a try

May 24, 2014

Form Saturday 24th May until 1st June is National Go Canoeing week.

You can register your miles here. They’re adding up the total miles done by everyone to see if we can all circumnavigate the UK in this one week.

We’ll be on the water (again)

Paddling the Shropshire Union Canal from Ellesmere
We went canoeing only last weekend on the Shropshire Union Canal (unfortunately our miles won’t count),  but we shall be out on the water again this weekend.

Canoeing is a great family activity

Family Canoeing
Canoeing is a great activity to do as a family.

You don’t have to do white water or cross seas to enjoy it either.

Seeing places from the water is a completely different experience to give your kids.

Starter Sessions during the National Go Canoeing Week

There are a number of organised starter sessions during National Go Canoeing Week, so a great time to try it out.

You can click on a link below to find a starter session in England. Note that age limits vary (typically between minimum age 6 to 7), and process vary too, from just requiring a ‘donation’, £2.50, up to £18 – but note that the starter sessions vary from place to place.

These are not all at regular canoe venues either. I did see one event being held on the National Trust lakes at Croome Park for example.

Unfortunately they’re not currently listing starter sessions in Wales or Scotland (so I think ‘National’ is a stretch), but the reason is that this is being funded by Sport England.

However, we’ve pulled together these links:

Canoe Tours during National Go Canoeing Week

There are also organised guided tours, which you can do if you are a complete beginner or an experienced paddler.

We’ve done guided tours before, and can be a great way to see an area you’ve not paddled before, plus someone else organises all the gear and return transport.

You can find more about the National Go Canoeing Week guided tours here.

If you’ve not paddled before, try and get your family on the water this week. You’ll enjoy it 😉
