This is a circular walk, about 13.5km, around Carsington Water in Derbyshire, not far from Ashbourne.
We started this route in the Carsington Water visitor’s centre and headed off around Stone Island, to begin with. We then headed north, past the activity centre, and along the signposted route.

The route can be cycled, and bikes with kids trailers can be hired at Carsington Water. Much of the path is shared with cyclists, though if you follow the signs, there are sections where the cyclists and walkers take a slightly different path.

You can optionally follow the route all the way around the shore of Carsington Water, or break off at the northern end to visit Carsington Village. This is the route we did and visited the Miners Arms pub in the village. This is a family-friendly and dog-friendly pub (though dogs are only allowed in some parts of the pub). The food was good, and with a belly’s full, we headed off for the remaining part of the walk.

This makes the route an ideal walk for Sunday, though beware that the pub is much less than half-way round. So depending on how early or late you head off, make the call on if to do the route clockwise with the pub first, or counterclockwise after walking most of the route.

If you do head off to the village, then you’ll need to cross a fast road, once on the way to the village, and once on the way back. The route also goes along a country road with no pavement, so please remember to walk on the right, except for at the blind bends.

The route is generally pushchair friendly, except perhaps for the section along a country road if you go via Carsington Village – which is still pushchair accessible, as long as you are happy wheeling it down a road with no footpath.
