The good

  • Good size: Not too big; not too small.
  • Excellent layout: good sized bedrooms, good sized living space, good sized built-in porch
  • No trip entrance and easy-to-use J-Door
  • Quick and Quiet door on bedroom
  • Good airflow through the tent. Side door can be left open but gap protected with bug mesh.
  • Darkend bedrooms

The not so good

  • You'll need to get some cheap wire tent pegs to fully peg out. Ideally, you should have some of these in your camping kit anyway.
  • Check the air tubes when inflating. You should do this anyway, but I didn't and nearly had a problem.

Our Review

The Outwell Sunhill 5 Air has many qualities that make it excellent for a family tent.

Tent Layout

Size wise, this tent is in the Goldilocks zone for most families: it's not too big and not too small.

It's not too big for weekend camping, and not too small for longer stays.

The bedroom area is also a good size, at 2.2 x 3 metres, and with a divider, it gives you flexibility on the bedroom layout.

There's a good-sized living area (2.4 x 3.4 m) and an extremely practical porch (1.7 x 3.4 m).

This tent has a great family layout. Though I found it doesn't have EHU entry on both sides, as this diagram shows.

Other Great Features

Other practical features include the Quick and Quiet doors in the bedroom, the new J-door design, and the no-trip tent entrance.

It also has good airflow through the tent, with the large tent through the back and the bug-mesh windows between the living area and the porch. Plus, the side door can be rolled open, leaving bug mesh zipped in place, and there are two low-level vents on either side.

Electric Hook-Up

Unlike the diagram I saw from Outwell, when I pitched this tent, I found the EHU cable entry only on the side by the door, not both sides of the tent.

This is my only main disappointment with this tent, as the non-door side was where I tend to place furniture. However, I solved the problem by running the cable under the porch on that side and through the tent door.

Pitching this tent was straightforward, though please check that the air tubes are sited properly and inflating correctly.

Unfortunately, I didn't do this simple check when pitching and nearly lost an air tube that had become unzipped.

One great new improvement I found with this tent is that it has buckled compression straps to help you put the tent back into the bag.

Outwell has also upgraded its tent pegs: the Outwell Stonehill 5 Air has chunky metal pegs that will last many years.

Metal Tent Pegs

The Outwell Stonehill 5 Air comes with these new, chunky, metal tent pegs.

The only downside is insufficient tent pegs for valance or no-trip entrance. However, that's easily solved by getting some cheap small wire tent pegs.
