The Outwell Pardelas M is an easy to unfold and comfortable camp bed.

Camp beds are both practical and unpractical.

They are practical, as the space underneath them provides you with ‘free’ storage space.

They are unpractical, in the sense that it’s another item to take to the campsite, and you need a tent that’s designed for them – if your tent has small bedrooms where the back of the tent slopes down, then good luck with fitting in a camp bed.

However, pick a good camp bed, and you should sleep better and be insulated from the cold ground.

But what is a good camp bed?

When I first tried the Outwell Pardelas M camp bed, it appeared to have all the qualities of a good camp bed. Fortunately, Outwell agreed to send us one to get a much closer look and put it to the test.

Comfort

Comfort is something most people will have at the top of the list when choosing a camp bed. Obviously, an uncomfortable bed is useless! 😉

Most camp beds work by securing a thick material tightly between a frame, and with just a piece of material, such a design is not necessarily the most comfortable of beds. However, some camp beds are designed to allow you to attach a sleeping mat, making them more like a bed at home: a bed frame and a mattress. (See our review of the Outwell Centuple Sleep System, or where we used a massive Outwell Dreamboat on the Outwell Laguna Hills L camp bed – a combination Shell says is better than any bed we have at home!)

Unlike normal camp beds, the Outwell Pardelas M comes with padding built into the material.

Outwell Pardelas M Camp Bed is padded

The camp bed comes with padded panels and is very comfortable.

So how well does the padding work?

Well, to me, it worked extremely well. The bed was very comfortable, with no need to put a sleeping mat on top of it. This, of course, will cut down on the gear you need to take to the campsite.

The Outwell Pardelas M has a detachable pillow. Being detachable, it is a larger pillow than the headrest pillows that come with some camp beds. However, it’s not very thick, so that you might need an additional camping pillow.  I’ve been using the Outwell Dreamboat Ergo Pillow with it, which works a treat.

The Outwell Pardelas M Camp Bed comes with a removable pillow.

Noise

This is something people new to camp beds overlook. It’s not until you’ve tried a noisy camp bed you notice the problem.

As mentioned earlier, most camp beds stretch the fabric tight over a bed frame—tight fabric on metal tents to make a noise when under tension, such as when lying on it. If you have a noisy bed, the noise may wake you and your family up every time you turn in the night.

I was fortunate to try many camp beds from different brands this year, and the Outwell Pardelas M impressed me with how quiet it was.

And after using it now for several nights, it’s still quiet 🙂

Ease of Set-up

I know some people can find setting up camp beds complicated. And after unfolding all the legs and attaching things, they forget to put the locking clip in place… which could result in the bed collapsing when you lay on it.

The Outwell Pardelas M is the easiest camp bed I’ve ever set up.

It only has one fold, and the legs fold out and lock into place with a simple mechanism.

Setting up the bed

The bed is straightforward to set up. Unfold the legs and lock them into place.

Storage and Transportation

Ease of set-up comes at a cost, and that’s pack size.

Camp beds that fold down small have complicated folding legs to set up.

The Outwell Pardelas M doesn’t. It is effortless to set up. The flip side of this is that it doesn’t fold down much.

Unlike the other Outwell camp beds I’ve reviewed, it doesn’t come with a storage bag either.

This is the one downside I have for the Outwell Pardelas M. It’s going to take more space to store and transport, and you’ll need to make sure you have some way to keep it clean when storing it or taking it to the campsite.

Size

The bed fit me well, but if you need a larger one, its big brother is the Outwell Pardelas L.

Verdict

Using the bed

Using the bed in the tent (along with the Robens Icefall Pro 600 Sleeping Bag)

I think the Outwell Pardelas M camp bed is a great bit of kit if you want to add that extra bit of comfort to your family camps.

As mentioned, though, make sure you have space to transport it and store it.
