Our Review

We've been using several head torches for camping and hiking. Mainly Petzls.

When we were kitting out our eldest daughter for her D of E expedition, the Petzls were not on the D of E approved product list, but the Life Systems head torch was.

Why? What's the difference?

Life Systems sent us over one to test.

Intensity 220 Head Torch

The first thing you notice is that this is a lot bigger than the smaller Petzl head torches we use for camping.

The batteries don't fit behind the light but instead in a separate battery pack you wear at the back of the head band.

It was nice that Life Systems supplied decent batteries too :-)

To be honest, I thought wearing the additional battery pack would be a pain, but you didn't really notice it.

Why all the extra power?

As soon as you turn on the head torch you soon realise why it needs more power. This head torch can put out a lot of light.

Below is a comparison of the different beams.

The focused beam puts out a great deal of light in one spot.

Switching the cover on the lens changes the beam to light up a wide area. Ideal of when you are out walking at night.

In fact, one of these head torches will light up an area good enough for your entire family.

Of course, there's the night-vision saving red light.

Finally, in the above photo we compared the beams of the Intensity 220 with the Petzl Tikka XP 2 - a head torch that I have found really good for camping and being out at night.

As you can see, the Lifesystems Head Torch makes the Petzl look like it is on the last life of it's batteries. (It wasn't).

So far, very impressive.

But it's not just good at putting out light up close. Check out the photo below. It can send it's beam quite far ahead too.

Conclusion

The Lifesystems Intensity 220, although larger than some head torches, is a great bit of kit.

A good bit of kit to keep in your backpack just in case you get caught out walking in the dark.

It gets the thumbs up from us.
