GOWTK Thumbs Up Award

The good

  • This sleeping bag from Coleman adds a bit of fun to nighttime when camping.

The not so good

  • As with most kids sleeping bags, it is only 2 season. Ideal for UK summer camping but add some extra insulation if camping earlier in Spring or later in Autumn.

Our Review

Here's a bit of fun for summer camping: a glow-in-the-dark sleeping bag.

Day vs Night

Let it soak up the light during the day, and the little bugs start to glow at night.

Using this sleeping bag

This is a rectangular shaped sleeping bag (167cm long).

The collar around the top of the sleeping bag is soft, but our little boy also used his Froggie travel pillow for a bit of extra support.

The sleeping bag is rated as a '2 season' bag (click here to find out more about sleeping bag temperature ratings), which means it should be good for the UK summer. As a guide, your child should be comfortable in this sleeping bag when the nighttime temperature is around 8°C, but cold if it falls to 3°C.

We tested this sleeping bag while camping in March, though we took steps to make sure there was adequate insulation underneath and our boy wore some thermal base layers. He had no problem with the cold, despite it being March and the wind blowing quite a bit.

How well does it glow?

The Glowing Bugs

As with most things that glow, don't expect it to light up your tent ;-)

We found leaving it out in the daylight was enough to see it glow once it got dark. You may find though that during the height of summer it might not always get dark enough at night to notice how well it glows.

One quick tip though is to 'charge it up' before your kid goes to bed by shining a bright light on it using a torch or lantern. We gave it a boost with this mini floodlight (which is extremely bright), and the sleeping bag glowed quite well.

Other features of this sleeping bag

In addition to glowing, there are a few other features we liked in this Coleman sleeping bag.

Its zip is designed not to snag...it's annoying when sleeping bag material gets stuck in the zip, and you can't get in or out of the sleeping bag. This zip design moves the material out of the way first.  Although we've not used it for a long time yet, we've not experienced any snagging.

Another great feature is the little pocket inside the sleeping bag, which could be used for keeping a torch handy, or as our youngest did, used the pocket to store a bear and other little toys he had.
