With Autumn's wet and muddy weather, and our lad's feet growing out of things so fast, we started to look to get him a new pair of walking shoes.

Fortunately, Trespass offered to send us one of their <a href="https://www.trespass.com/kids/footwear/walking-boots" target="_blank" rel="noopener sponsored noreferrer">Kid's Walking Shoes</a> to test out. Thanks, Trespass :-)

Having looked at the different options on <a href="https://www.trespass.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener sponsored noreferrer">the Trespass website</a>, there were quite a few choices of kids walking boots or shoes.

We opted for walking shoes over walking boots, as these give the most use.

## Trespass Gillon Review

They arrived quickly.  The Carbon and Kiwi colour look great and got a big thumbs up from our lad.

The first thing I checked out was the tread, an important part of any outdoor footwear.

Inside they have plenty of padding, and our lad found them very comfortable.

Enough of the indoor testing; it was time to get outside :-)

The first test was on a mix of paths and countryside for a handful of miles while taking the dog for a walk. Despite being new, our lad found them comfortable. There was no rubbing that you might sometimes get on new shoes.

The next test was to get them outdoors for real, with a hike on a wet day up <Link href="/places/trail/earls-hill-walk-shropshire/">a very steep muddy hill</Link>.

We were all slipping on this hill, but these shoes held their grip well.

It was a good test with mud, puddles, forest, wet grassy slopes, gravel descent, and rocks.

No sore feet. No wet feet.

## Verdict

These kids' walking shoes did exactly what they said they would.
They're comfortable, dry, and great for helping your kids explore the great outdoors.

I love the Merrell Moab Ventilators I bought.
These shoes have walked thousands of miles in all weathers: from snow and ice, through to the heat of the desert in Death Valley.

I used these shoes as my everyday shoes and for all outdoor activities, even preferring them over walking boots, so my Moabs had plenty of wear and tear. The shoes stayed in excellent form throughout.

The cushioned insole makes these shoes very comfortable. I could walk for miles and miles without getting sore or aching feet.

The Vibram soles provide plenty of grips, even when scrambling up hills or going down tricky descents.

Another great feature of these shoes is the breathability. I do not like getting hot feet.
Hot feet means sweaty feet, which means you are more likely to get blisters.
This was never a problem for my Merrel Moab Ventilators, even when wearing them in 48C heat in Death Valley.
I got the version of the Moabs that didn't have Gortex protection. However, I never had a problem with wet feet, even when out in them in the rain.
We give these walking shoes the 'thumbs-up'. They come highly recommended.

Being so impressed with <Link href="/product/salomon-xa-pro-3d-junior-hiking-shoes/">the children's version of the Salomon XA</Link>, we bought an adult pair too.

As with the child shoes, the adult version is lightweight, good grips, breathable, and use the Salomon 'no laces' system.
The shoes have ended up with a lot of constant use, and even after a few years, they were still performing well.
We did have an occasion when our puppy chewed through one of the special laces, but we were able to buy a replacement.

These are the adult version of the Salomon XA Pro 3D shoes, designed for women. Although technically a trail running shoe, they make excellent trail walking shoes too.

The Salomon XA kids shoes are technically sold as trail running shoes, though as we found, they make excellent shoes for the kids.

We would class these as best as summer shoes, as the breathable material means that feet won't stay dry if your child decides to wade through streams and deep puddles.
The ease with how they can put them on, and the lightweight nature, as well as good grips, make these very good outdoor shoes for getting the kids out hiking, climbing, canoeing, or many other outdoor activities.
These shoes have put with a lot of abuse and lasted really well so great quality.

You can never have too many outdoor boots! They're essential for any outdoor family's collection of gear. 
<a href="http://www.muckbootcompany.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Muck Boot Company</a> sent us over a pair of <a href="https://muckbootcompany.co.uk/products/mens-hale-pull-on-wellington-boot-black" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Kids' Hale Outdoor All Weather Sport Boots</a> to try.
If you've not heard of The Muck Boot Company before, they are a company that specialises in high-performance outdoor footwear for adults and children.
The Kids' Hale boots come in a good range of sizes and colours. Some of the designs are quite funky and very appealing to children. Who would want ugly black boots when you can have a blue leopard or pink zebra design! If you've got style conscious children, these boots could be your answer.

## Hale Boots Features

These boots are meant to handle any situation: mud, water, and the cold.
Here are a few key features

<li>The boots are insulated with 4mm thickness of neoprene and fleece lining. The insulation is breathable to minimise sweaty feet.</li>
<li>100% waterproof lower half.</li>
<li>Good traction design on the rubber sole.</li>

## Putting the Hale Boots to the Test

First impressions of theses boots are that they look quite chunky with super thick insoles, but, more importantly, a pair of boots that will last and stand up to child's play. They certainly look good quality and well made.

They don't have pull on handles like some boots do to assist putting them on, but my little tester had no problem getting them and off himself, the wide topline helps with this. There are small tabs on the boots to help you if you need the help.
They were a good size with room to wear a thick pair of socks if required. No complaints from my tester that they were uncomfortable to wear, and are padded inside to keep little feet comfortable. They stayed on his feet well, with no slipping or movements, and didn't fall off. 
Despite it being cold we took them for a splash in a stream. His feet stayed warm and dry.
The boots have a neoprene lining (the same stuff as you find in a wetsuit) that also has a fleece layer. The lining provides excellent insulation against the cold and is easy to dry out if it does get wet.

The only thing you need to watch for is that the waterproof section only goes up to just past the ankle. With the boots not being waterproof all over means there is better breathability in the insulated boots, but if your child sinks their feet into deeper water, the neoprene can become soaked and let in water. However, we only found they let in water after being soaked for some time, and with a lot of splashing going on! 
We found the neoprene was plenty splashproof.
They are easy and light to walk in, the rugged slip-resistant soles worked well when we climbed a hill with some slippery outcrops. 
The wrap-around sole that covered the toe area is something you usually see on walking or climbing boots and was good to see on a pair of welly boots.

## The Results

Now for a pair of welly boots, these are probably a bit more expensive than I would usually pay, but as the saying goes you pay for what you get and with these boots you a pair of strong, sturdy, comfortable boots that will last so a bit of investment. You can also hand them down to other children in the family as well, and I'm sure will sell well second-hand too.

My little boy loves these boots, so there are lots more puddle-splashing, muddy walks to come. We certainly give these the GOWTK Thumbs Up.

Walking is an easy form of getting exercise outdoors.
However, if your feet are uncomfortable, you're not going to enjoy it.
I've <Link href="/family-hiking/walking-boot-insoles/">mentioned before</Link> about replacing the insole of your shoes or boots to make them fit better for walking.
Well, Shell and I recently had insoles fitted from a company called <a href="https://www.superfeet.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Superfeet</a>, and we've been quite impressed.

## What's wrong with the insoles in your shoes

The insoles in many walking shoes and boots are just there to cover up the stitching where the sole meets the side of the shoe or boot.
I have been using a pair of <Link href="/family-hiking/family-summer-walking-shoes/">Merrell walking shoes</Link> for some time now, over all sorts of terrain (literally from desserts to snow). These have been a really good fit.
However, I have noticed recently that after a day on my feet, they do get a little tired now.
So far, with the Superfeet insole, I've not found the same problem.

## What's different about Superfeet

Superfeet has a background in podiatric medicine. Unlike many other insoles, they consist of a rigid part to better stabilise the foot.

As it was explained to me, the way they support the heal supports the foot's arch.

There's a whole range of different insoles to support the different foot and shoe shapes.

Although you can purchase Superfeet online, the easiest thing to do is to go into a specialist outdoor shop and get them fitted properly. Cotswold Outdoor staff are trained to fit Superfeet insoles, so you should be able to find somewhere to fit these quite easily.
As a guide, the different insoles are colour coded.

<ul>
<li>Green- suitable for outdoor hiking /roomier footwear</li>
<li>Blue – suitable for more approach-style shoes</li>
<li>Carbon – suitable for tighter athletic shoes- such as low volume running/cycling shoes</li>
<li>Orange/Berry – more cushioning for sporty activities</li>
</ul>
They have junior sizes, only down to size 11.5.

## The Results

It was recommended that you build up the use of the Superfeet insoles gradually. Perhaps just an hour or two to give your feet time to adjust to the different feel. And at first, you did notice the shoes felt different.

Now, we don't notice the Superfeet insoles in our shoes at all.

And what's more, after many more miles of walking across different terrain, my shoes are still really comfy...and no more aching feet either :-)

Hiking boots and shoes can take a lot of punishment. Not just from rugged terrain and gravel paths, but also muddy puddles and streams. Water getting into your boots and not drying out can make them have a little bit of a whiff as the bacteria grows. Throw in some sweaty feet, and you have a recipe for some pongy shoes!
There are a few shoe deodorisers out there, but <a href="https://www.stormcare.co.uk/">Storm</a> is a company that specialises in providing cleaning and care products for outdoor gear. So I requested a sample of their Storm Deo to review.

Here's what they say:

<li>Reduces bacteria and odour levels</li>
<li>Ideal for footwear, helmets, gloves</li>

I tested these on my hiking shoes (which I wear everywhere!) as well as some running shoes that have taken a lot of punishment on the trails, including plenty of muddy puddles.
Although these shoes weren't that smelly, there was a 'used' smell to them.
A few squirts of the spray and they were noticeably better.

You do have to leave the Storm Deo to dry out before using the shoe. You also need to make sure you squirt it into all the places. The sample I had was the smaller size, so I was quite economical with it.

After a few weeks, the smell of the Deo had disappeared. There was a 'used' smell, but not as noticeable. So despite only putting a few squirts in, it does appear to help keep the smells away, but I would recommend using more than just a few squirts and treat your shoes by making sure you cover all of them inside, so getting the much larger 300 ml might be better.

A handy spray to remove any smells from your hiking and walking boots or shoes.

A little perk of being <a href="https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getoutside" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a get outside champion for Ordnance Survey</a> is that you sometimes get products to review, so when Ordnance Survey asked me if I would be interested in reviewing a pair of Merrell hiking shoes, I couldn't say no!
Merrell is a well-known brand with a reputation for quality, performance footwear. Would the <a href="http://www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/search?q=Siren%20Sport%20Q2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ladies Siren Sport Q2</a> live up to my high expectations.....

## Ladies Merrell Siren Sport Q2 Review

These shoes are designed specifically for ladies, taking into account how we walk/move and our frame. It's nice to see a brand doing their research and design a shoe to meet ladies requirements.
When I received these shoes, they came with a 'theme' <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23mynature" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">**#mynature**</a>, which got me thinking how I could test them out.
The best place to test them out would be in the forest climbing trees!
With my Merrell's on, we headed off into the forest for a <a href="https://goape.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">GoApe adventure</a>.

I have to admit I was very nervous about this, so really hoped my shoes wouldn't let me down as I had enough to worry about!!
I screamed my way around the course scrambling through tunnels, climbing ladders, crossing wobbly bridges, and whizzing down zip lines and my Merrell shoes didn't let me down.

This probably sounds daft, but I didn't know I was wearing them they are unbelievably light and comfortable.
The contoured footbed supported all three arches of my foot so although the shoes felt light, my feet were well supported.
The durable traction on the outside enabled me to climb the ladders, cross bridges and ropes safely. I had no issues with the laces untieing.
I wore the shoes all day and was very impressed, no aching feet, no blisters. They did what I asked of them providing comfort, support and traction.
Since GoApe they have been on lots of walking adventures and are perfectly at home in natures playground. They are now my everyday walking shoes for days out, casual and longer walks.

If you're looking for a lady's shoe for low-level hiking that is comfortable, light and supportive, then the Merrell Siren Sport Q2 may be an option to consider.
A point to note - the sizes are on the small size and I went up by half a size, which fitted perfectly.

I've become a walking shoe convert, only resorting to walking boots when the weather is really bad or I know it's going to be bad underfoot where the additional ankle support will be a good idea.
<Link href="/family-hiking/family-summer-walking-shoes/">My old pair of walking shoes</Link> lasted really well. I must have walked thousands of miles in them. I've been everywhere from the hottest place on earth (<Link href="/travel/usa-road-trip/desert-and-mountains/">Death Valley</Link>) to out in them in the snow and ice.  They become my everyday pair of shoes, even if I'm not heading off on the trails or hills.
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and it's time for my old shoes to be retired. Fortunately, <a href="https://www.milletsports.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Millet Sports</a> sent me over a pair of <a href="https://www.milletsports.co.uk/product/brown-salomon-x-ultra-ltr-gtx-mens-hiking-shoes/223032_milletsports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Salomon X Ultra walking shoes</a> to review ;-)

## Salomon X Ultra Shoes

One of the first things you'll notice about these shoes when you pick them up is just how lightweight they are.
Compared to the mesh found on my old shoes, I found the X Ultra a little warmer to wear, but I never got sweaty feet, even when we had that recent hot spell. This is probably due to the Gortex lining that makes them breathable. I've also been through a fair few puddles and wet long grass and the shoes have remained dry.

Another noticeable thing about these shoes are the laces...or lack of them!
We've used this Salomon lace system before. It's an elasticated cord system that you can tighten and loosen.
There's an elasticated flap on the tongue of the shoe where you tuck the excess cord away.

So you can use these shoes almost like slip-ons, and tighten as needed.
I like traditional laces to keep the shoe firm to my foot. However, as long as I tighten these, I've not had any issues with them and they have been working well.

Inside the shoe is an Ortholite insole. This has been providing great support and comfort, so at the moment, I'm not looking to upgrade the insole.
Another part of the Salomon X Ultra shoes that I like are the Contragrip soles. I've really noticed how well these have provided grip, even when scrambling up loose gravel surfaces.

## Verdict

A really great walking shoe for out on the trails or for everyday use that I'm happy to recommend and give the thumbs up to.
And they aren't just for men: you can find these shoes for ladies too.

I’ve done enough walking to see the need for dedicated walking boots, but I prefer to keep things simple. I have a pair of ‘going out’ shoes and a pair of universal shoes for ‘everything else’. Now that I am camping more and needing something more robust I have taken to ditching my trainers and now prefer to wear a pair of walking shoes.
For me the <a href="http://www.lowa.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lowa San Luis GTX</a> walking shoe therefore is perfect, it is robust enough to track up a hill side or sandy dune, casual enough to look good while sitting in a beachside cafe drinking an Americano and sturdy enough to trudge through the mud of a damp camp site.

I’ve been wearing these for about 2 weeks now and they are starting to mould to my feet.

However I have noticed that they are a bit on the narrow side, so the little toe on each foot feels ‘pinched’, but I’m sure they will bed in properly.
The uppers are a stone colour sued with orange highlights, the soles have a wide white rim and the bottoms are an orange triangular grid affair.

As soon as I saw the bottoms my first thought was “that’s going to be a heck of a job to clean if I step in any dog mess!”

Thankfully I haven’t but I have traipsed through the mud at a local National Trust woodland walk and I was right, the grid fills up with debris (both mud and small stones). The best way of removing this build up is to wait for the mud to dry and give them a swift bang on the ground and most of the muck falls out. The small stones can be a bit tricky to remove though.
According to the Lowa website the open sole allows air to circulate through the shoe to ensure your feet stay dry and sweat free.

There is a nice 5 mile walk around where I live which does a circular route around Ironbridge, it takes you up the side of the gorge and past some pretty fabulous pubs, over the river and back to the bedlam furnaces. The shoes behaved perfectly and the raised sole protected me from feeling the sharp stones of the old paths.

A neat feature of these shoes is the removable inserts, if they get wet or a little ‘fragrant’ they can be taken out, deodorised or cleaned if need be. I like that idea so long as they stay put while you are wearing them - and so far they have!

Lowa have categorised these San Luis shoes as ‘travel’ which in my opinion is about right, they are rugged enough to go for a walk in, but they wouldn’t be the choice of a serious hiker. Lowa do have boots that you would chose for a day’s walking so there is plenty of choice in their range.

AKU Erarer GTX Boots

<a href="https://www.aku.it/en/company/company-profile.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AKU</a> is not an outdoor brand I am particularly familiar with, so given a chance to try some of their footwear I jumped at the chance.

AKU is an Italian company that has been around for a long time, with more than 30 years of experience in the design and production of trekking and outdoor footwear. They have an extensive collection range from mountaineering to active free time footwear.

The guys from AKU sent me over from the trekking collection the Ladies Erera GTX to try out.

## Testing the AKU Erera Gortex boots

There is nothing better than putting on your walking boots and taking a stroll, so with new boots to put to the test we headed over to beautiful Llangollen in Wales to try out a new walk.

Our walk aimed to reach the summit of Castell Dinas Bran. A 10k walk took around 4 hours on various terrains along canal towpaths, fields, woods and a steep climb to our goal.

## So, how did the boots perform?

First impressions: what a nice looking well-made pair of boots.
I found them very light and comfortable to wear. They provided good support and no aching feet or blisters to report.
The Vibram soles were solid with ample traction for the terrain I was covering, and I expect to have excellent long term durability.
My feet felt very protected, with the sturdy outsole and cushioned and padded insole.
I like the padded tongue which attached to the upper part of the boot. This helped to keep the boot watertight and prevent debris getting in.
Well in true British style, the weather on our walk gave the boots a real testing too! Cold temperatures and lashings of horizontal rain! The Gore-tex membrane kept my feet dry and comfortable.

## Verdict

These boots provide exactly what you want from trekking boots lightweight, comfortable and waterproof. I couldn't find anything to fault, yes, they are expensive, but I look at it as a positive investment for the health of your feet and enjoyment of the outdoors.
If you want your feet to feel and look good, then these boots fit the bill.

If you are like us, we tend to let the mud dry then brush it off, or wash them in the sink - messy job!!
Having seen some of our muddy footwear on social media, <a href="http://www.bootbuddy.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Boot Buddy</a> asked us if we would be interested in trying out Boot Buddy, a little gadget that helps to help clean dirty footwear.

The Boot Buddy was easy to use and performed well.

I had to fill up the water holder twice to clean both boots. ( approx 600mls of water )
This is far less water than if I had cleaned them with a running tap. You do need to give the water chamber a little squeeze as you are scrubbing.
I did find that in the process I got a little bit muddy!

When you scrub with the bristled brush particularly on the tread of the boots you get a little splattered with mud.
Not an issue just something to be aware of and be prepared for!
I also used the Boot Buddy on a pair of casual boots that were looking in need of a clean. It worked well on these much less splattering of mud and my daughter was rather pleased with her clean boots.

## Verdict

A simple, quick and easy tool to clean muddy footwear. It is portable so you can clean your boots wherever you are, so saves getting mud in the car, handy also if you are camping, caravanning, etc. I'm hoping that it will encourage the kids to clean their own boots, well I can dream!

**The guys over a HiTec got in touch to let us know about their range of walking boots. We wanted to know if they had walking boots that a family might be interested in using. These boots all claim to be waterproof, but are they? We just had to test that out.**

## New Boots, No Blisters

Both Shell and I have the <a href="http://www.hi-tec.co.uk/search?q=bandera" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HiTec Bandera II</a> waterproof boots.

Shell's is a slightly different design to mine.

With any new pair of walking boots, you put them on with a bit of trepidation. After all, you don't want blisters following your first hike! However, these HiTec boots were very comfortable.

While we have only been testing these boots for a couple of months, we've managed to put plenty of miles on them, and they are still very comfortable.

I think the comfort is due to decent insoles provided with the boots and good padding around the ankle so that the boots don't rub when laced up.

Our youngest has also been testing a pair of HiTec boots. These are the child-sized <a href="http://www.hi-tec.co.uk/kids/footwear/hiking-and-walking-shoes-and-boots/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Flash Fast Hike boots</a>.
Despite the boots looking large on him, they fit well. He has also found them very comfortable and has not complained about them once, either when hiking, or when he's climbing in a play park or up a tree!

## Boots for Growing Feet

Something we found with the HiTech child boots is their Big-Fit system, which is designed to let your child get more wear out of their boots as their feet grow. A very useful feature when investing in kids walking boots.
The Big-Fit system is quite simple but effective.
The boots come with two insoles. When your child's foot gets a bit tighter in the boots, remove the first insole, and the boots 'should' fit.

I was a little sceptical. After all, kids always wear out shoes by the feet getting longer. How could removing an insole help?
Well, the upper insole has a curved edge. When you take that insole out, the boot can accommodate a foot that's slightly larger all the way around.
Neat.

I doubt it would work for a huge growth spurt, but for normal growing, it could extend the use of the child walking boots a little bit longer.


## Wet or Dry Feet?

All the boots are labelled as 'waterproof', despite having breathable mesh on their uppers.
Now I don't expect walking boots to behave like wellies, but I do want them to handle walking through puddles or crossing a stream.
I'm glad to say that we've certainly been putting this to the test (especially our lad!), and all of our boots have stayed comfortably dry.

We have worn the boots out in warm weather too. When it is hot, your feet get warm in the boots, which is expected when wearing walking boots. However, I am also pleased to say that their breathability works too.

## Verdict

We've not tried HiTec walking boots before, and despite a healthy scepticism over claims made about the walking boots, these have performed well so far.

We all like the HiTec boots. They are currently the go-to footwear we grab when getting out and about. They get the ***Thumbs Up Award*** from us.

We test HiTec's family walking boots. They all claim to be waterproof. We just had to test that out! The child boots are meant to grow with their feet too.

Autumn, Winter, and Spring are great times of year for family hikes but those seasons can get cold and wet. It's important that your child's feet are kept warm and dry, and their footwear provides good grip underfoot so that you can all still enjoy getting outside.

First impressions of these boots are that they appear to be another well-made boot. At a slightly higher price than some other children's boots, it's good to know that you appear to be paying for quality.

Ideal if you are going to be walking over uneven terrain.

These Keen boots are insulated, making them perfect for getting outside in the colder months.

Underneath they have good tread on the soles.
We took them out on a fairly rocky route, and the boots faired well under the uneven, wet ground, providing both good grip and ankle support.

### Waterproof &amp; Snow Ready

The boots are waterproof, and with the insulation that runs from the feet up to the lower calf, the boots should be good for wading through several inches of snow.
We have splashed around in a fair amount of puddles, and the boots did remain waterproof.

In a recent dumping of snow, the BASIN WP boots kept our daughter's feet warm and dry.

### Laces

As you can see from the picture these boots have laces all the way up the ankle, however, there are no laces to tie.
Instead, they have a bungee type system. Simply put your child's foot into the boot and pull the laces tight against the toggle. This makes them quick and easy to get on and off, and great for kids who don't like tying laces!


### Verdict

Our daughter likes these boots, and they've certainly been good on the testing we've done. The Keen Basin WP boots get the thumbs up from us as another recommend a pair of kids walking boots.

It wasn't very long ago when it was really hard to find decent outdoor clothing for kids. A lot of high street shops focus more on 'fashion' clothing, that may look 'outdoorsy', but are completely useless as soon as a bit of wind and rain hits them.

Fortunately things may be changing, as more outdoor brands are turning their attention to producing kids clothes, with the same technical qualities that can be found in adult versions. This is good news for all our kids.

We were lucky in summer to equip ourselves with <Link title="Family Summer Walking Shoes" href="/family-hiking/family-summer-walking-shoes/">decent summer walking shoes</Link> from the high street. Now the Autumn hiking season is starting (and small feet have grown again!), it's time for new walking boots.
The North Face is a well recognised brand for outdoor clothing. Did you know, they also make kid sized walking boots? And decent ones too.
What's more, you get them on the high street from Blacks, and are available in both boys and girls styles.

## The North Face Boy's "Chilkats" Walking Boot

The first impression of the Boy's Chilkats Boot is that it's really well made.

It comes in two parts, with the lower half looking like a ruggedised welly boot, so you just know puddles aren't a problem. In fact, the entire boot has been treated to be waterproof, and all the seams have been sealed.

The inside of the boot is padded and insulated, which is going to be great for family hikes in winter. The North Face claim this could keep the feet warm even down as far as -25ºC ...though we've not tested them when it was *that* cold!
The grip on the soles are very good too. We tried these boots on a variety of terrains. They had pretty good grip when going on a spot of bouldering at Snowdonia in Wales.

This is The North Face's Winter Grip technology that they claim works well on icy paths too. With the waterproofing and insulation, plus the winter grip, these boots are going to be great when the winter hits, even in the snow and ice.
Unlike shoes, the high sides of these boots means they give plenty of support to your boy's ankle.
When our little lad first wore them he did find walking in them a little funny, since they added nearly an inch to his height. However, he soon got used to them, and was running around and climbing over things in no time.
These boots certainly get the thumbs up from us.

You can get these in several sizes, from size 10 in Children's up to size 6, and are available from Blacks.

If you don't like the black colour you can get them in beige, though we think the black works well for this time of year.

At the time of writing these boots were available for £50 from Blacks, though check their website for the last price and offers.

## The North Face Girl's McMurdo Walking Boot

Fortunately, the girls don't get left out, with the McMurdo girl's walking boot.

As with the Boy's Chilkats boot, these are fully waterproof and designed for the cold wet weather in the wintery months.

They are well insulated too, using the same Heatseeker technology as the boy's boot, but in addition come with a faux-fur collar to the boot, which our daughter found very stylish.

Once again, we found these boots to be well made, comfortable and had plenty of grips.

There's plenty of support in these boots for hiking across uneven terrain, and with good toe protection, you should protect your kids' feet even when they're not paying enough attention to where they're walking.
These are another great kid's walking boot for winter, and get the thumbs up from us.

Well now a US firm 'Bogs' has arrived on these shores, and their boots are becoming very popular. So with our 'middle one' growing out of her current wellingtons, we gave a pair of Bogs boots a try.



## Bogs: A different sort of welly boot

If you are used to the traditional Dunlop or Hunter wellington boot, you'll immediately notice that these boots aren't rubber all over.


For this type of Bogs boot, the Kids Solids Boot, the upper is made with a neoprene type material - the same you may find in a wetsuit.

This insulates well, making these boots really warm.



They say -30 F on the back of the boot, so no more cold toes when out for a walk in these!



The lower part of the boot is covered in rubber and looks more like a traditional boot, but the warm neoprene is still underneath.



We found these waterproof, even when getting the neoprene wet, which didn't soak up the water as a wetsuit would.



Bogs say that it is a 'waterproof Neo-Tech' lined with 'Bogs Max-Wick moisture-wicking technology'. All we know is that the water stayed outside the boots.



Bogs also say they have 'DuraFresh odour protection'...so that's good to know ;-)



## The Verdict

So the verdict? Our kid has found them very comfortable and a bit more trendy than normal boots.

We've not had them long, but they've been on a few walks and survived a Girl Guide camp in early March.

After 100s of miles (maybe even thousands?!?) of days out, hiking, camping, and the relentless walking to and from school, my old boots looked tired. Very tired.



I had replaced these old boots once already, but the 'cheap' boots didn't last a few months, and I was back to my trusty old pair of boots.



So, this time, it was time for me to get a new pair instead of the kids. And I didn't want to go for the cheapest after what happened last time.



## What sort of walking boots to get?


Now I do some walking, but this is mainly on paths or fairly good ground.



We do go out climbing rocky hills occasionally, but not mountaineering. So I didn't need a full-size boot or something too stiff, and I didn't want anything heavy that would be like walking around with a pair of bricks strapped to my feet!



I was looking for a mid-sized boot, lightweight, comfortable, and waterproof.



## Salomon Manilla Boots

After an hour of trying on boots in Cotswold Outdoor, walking up and down their ramp, I decided on the Salomon Manilla Mid GTX boot for women.



I was surprised at just how lightweight these boots are.



They are also comfortable, provide sufficient foot protection, and grip the sole well. The loop on the back of the boots makes them easier to get on &amp; off.



I did find their sizing slightly small and went for a larger size than I usually buy (and yes, I took walking socks to try them on).



Already, I've been out on many walks in these boots. No blisters. No water leaks. Very impressed. Will it finally be time to get rid of my old boots!!



I recommend these Salomon's if you're looking for some walking boots.


So my old boots were given the boot, and it was time to find something new. After much searching, I bought the Salomon Manilla boots and have been very pleased with them.

***In this review of the Peter Storm Ormskirk walking boots, we give them a good dunking to see how waterproof they really are. ***



Not everyone can justify the money for a pair of high-end walking boots, especially when you have kids to kit out too, and perhaps you don't get out hiking as much as you would like.



Well, you can get some decent boots on the high street that don't cost too much.



We tried out the Peter Storm Ormskirk walking boots. At the time of writing this they were on offer at both Millets and Blacks or £40.



## Are High Street Walking Boots Any Good?


As with most things, you do get what you pay for. But if you keep an eye out for a good deal in the shops, you can pick up a pair of walking boots without breaking the bank.



Now you wouldn't be trekking the Himalayas, but for the occasional hike with kids, there's no excuse not to kit yourself out.



### Things to look for when buying walking boots

Try a pair on. If possible, take some walking socks with you.

You want the boot to support your ankle when the ground is unstable, but not be uncomfortable to walk in.

Shops like Blacks, Millets, or Cotswold Outdoor on the high street usually have the staff to help you find a good fit, and sometimes an area to try them out too.

Be careful of *really good prices* from some shops. Some things can cook like walking boots but are just trainers just dressed up.

Walking boots should have a much firmer sole than any trainer, with much deeper treads too.

Look for how the sole fits the shoe. It should come up the side of the boot a little way, and not just stuck on underneath, as it would with a trainer.

Check the stitching. Poor stitching can come undone as well as being a source for leaks.

## Are the Peter Storm Ormskirk Walking Boots any good?

The Ormskirk Boots feel very comfortable.



They also feel a little warm. Ideal for the cooler months but not too sure about them for summer use (mind you, it is November currently, so trying them in summer will have to wait a while now).



Some of the reviews on the internet reported that the boots leaked. This was a concern: are we trading price for quality?



So with that in mind, we gave them a good test: We dunked them in a bucket of water.

The boot held up well. No water came in, even when I held them under the water, completely covering the laces and the tongue.



Although the walking boots were soaked, it wasn't quite the same as a real downpour though: if you have waterproof trousers on, all that rainwater heads straight down to your boots, and if you've not protected your legs correctly (i.e. wear some gaiters - <Link title="What are gaiters and how to keep your feet dry when hiking or walking" href="/family-hiking/gaiters-feet-dry/">see here</Link>), your boots will fill with water.



I can't say what the cause for other reviewers to get wet feet was - maybe they did get a bad pair - but when I tried the boots, they did remain dry.



Taking them up on the hills and through muddy forests, the boots have remained comfortable and dry.



I'll update this post if I find any issues with them, but I'm pleased with the Ormskirk boots.

## Update 2 years on


Well, the boots had lots of use. And I mean, *lots* of use.



They didn't fall apart.



However, I did notice that they lost their waterproof coating. You can easily reapply this with products from the likes of Granger. However, I have since been testing a HiTech pair of boots, and so I haven't needed to treat them.

Regatta Crossland Kids Walking Shoe &#8211; this one in the colour for boys

The Regatta Crossland is an update to the model that our kids have used for a few years (hand-me-down from one to another).



Regatta is at the cheaper end of the market, and we have had some adult walking shoes wear out rather quickly, but we've thoroughly tested both Regatta children's walking shoes and walking boots, and they've lasted very well. Kids feet grow so fast that they don't need to last quite as long as an adult pair of boots, where you might invest a bit more money but expect the boots to last many years.

The Regatta Crossland walking shoes for kids come in two different colours, so there's something for both girls and boys.



They come in sizes from 1 to 13 (children's sizes of course). 




## What's good about these walking shoes


As this doesn't have a full height ankle support, most kids will find these shoes more comfortable than a full walking boot, as well as being lighter.



The shoes have an Isotex water-resistant membrane, which is also breathable to help reduce this risk of sweaty feet.



They also include a rubberised toe and heel bumper, protecting the shoe from scuffs but also providing a bit of grip if they're doing any scrambling over rocks.



If you notice on the picture above, the laces pull the supports that go around the foot. This ensures a good fit, which is what you want in a walking shoe.



The sole includes some cushioning to provide a more comfortable fit, which you won't get with trainers when walking over stoney or rough ground.



## Entry level walking shoe for kids

Kids feet keep growing, and so buying new walking shoes and walking boots can get expensive.



We end up buying new walking shoes or boots for our kids each year, so to make pennies stretch we have bought many Regatta walking shoes. For us, these have lasted well, but I notice this Crossland walking shoe has some features that look more like a trainer construction.



I would, therefore, grade these shoes as a budget option that looks fine for summer hikes on not too difficult terrain.



If you are doing some walks with the kids that are a bit more than that, then you might want to look at some other kids walking shoes that have a better sole that wraps up around the toe and heal a bit more, and has less breathable material so close to the ground (as this breathable material tends to be splash resistant but not fully waterproof, so you want it higher up the walking shoe to avoid feet getting wet from puddles).


The Regatta Crossland are kids walking shoes that come in both a girl and boy version that won't break the bank.
