Every campsite has recycling. However, not every tent has separate recycling bins.

I don't know about you, but separating the recycling (clean stuff, too) from a rubbish bag is not a lovely camping experience.

Outwell has tried to solve the problem with the new Outwell Collaps RecycleIt Basket.

## It's Collaps

If you are familiar with Outwell camping accessories, you'll know the excellent Outwell Collaps range.

The Outwell RecycleIt Basket is very similar to the collapsible <Link href="/reviews/outwell-wash-base-review">Outwell Wash Base</Link>.

So it folds flat for easy storage and transport.

You can use it as a regular basket, as it's deep and comes with a carry-handle.

The difference with the Outwell RecycleIt Basket is the top section that enables you to clip in two rubbish bags.

We found it worked perfectly.

You can carry it to the recycle bins and empty the bags' contents. You don't need to throw out the bags, further reducing waste 👍.

I've not tested it on a full-size air bed, but it worked fine on our massive <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-16">16cm Outwell Dreamboat</Link>.

## Just how small?

This weighs just 60 grams and is only 5 cm high.

## It's a lantern too

A light (2 brightness modes plus a red flashing mode) is on the underside. On the top is a small handle with a small clip in the kit. 
Everything you need to turn it into a tent lantern when you've finished inflating your beds.

## Accessories

It has a small pouch containing the pump, charging cable, and different inflation adapters.

## Flextail Alternative?

Another small pump is popular from the brand Flextailgear - which is often just called "<a href="https://amzn.to/3DOwHtM" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Flextail</a>". 

They make several mini-pumps. However, when searching on Amazon for one, I found this AKSOUL alternative, which was smaller and cheaper. 👍

I don't think you could go wrong with either mini-pump. However, I tried this Flextail alternative, and it's proved good so far. 😀

This is a really handy item for your camping kit. And it won't take up much space either.

Easy Camp

When we first used a caravan with an awning, I was impressed with the awning carpets.

You could place these down on the wet and muddy ground, and they'd provide excellent underfoot protection. 

They can lay across the grass without killing it. 

Water can pass straight through to the ground underneath.

And although they are not fabric, they are warm enough underfoot.

> Why wasn't this style of carpet available for tent camping?

To me, camping was missing out. 

We often use a tent with a porch or put up a tarp shelter. 

Using a caravan awning-style carpet for the tent porch is much better than the traditional tent groundsheet.

So, when I saw Easy Camp had introduced such a solution, I just had to try them out.

### The Easy Camp Moonlight Carpets

If you are unaware, Easy Camp has a great collection of glamping-style tents, such as the Easy Camp Moonlight Cabin.

They have designed two Easy Camp Moonlight Carpets to go with those tents: the Easy Camp Moonlight Round Carpet and the Easy Camp Moonlight Square Carpet (though it's actually rectangular, not square).

These are just like those caravan awning-style carpets but in a more manageable camping-friendly size. 

And you don't need an Easy Camp tent to use them. They are a great addition to any tent.

This is the smaller of the two, with a diameter of 150 cm.

It's decorative enough for inside your tent and works well under a porch or tarp shelter.

These carpets are a great addition to your camping kits.  I think the rectangular carpet is probably more practical out of the two.

4 Towels with each different colour, carry case, and mesh bag

When I saw the Outwell Seadream Towel set at this year's season launch, I thought these looked ideal for families. 

However, some microfibre towels don't work too well. Fortunately, Outwell agreed to send us a sample to try out 👍

### Neatly Packaged

The set comes in a neat grab-and-go bag. This has proved useful on a few camping trips, as I can check the pack is with the camping gear, and I know we all have towels.

Plus, inside, there's an additional mesh bag. This is useful for putting your wet towels. So if you use one or two towels, there's no need to put the wet towels in with the dry ones.

### Pick your colour

Each towel has a different colour piping. 

You can tell someone with a family designed this; each person can choose a colour as 'their towel'.

### Do they work?

Yes. I'm happy to report that these towels do dry you, unlike some other microfibre towels 😃

While not as big as a large bath towel at home, I found them perfectly adequate for the showers at the campsite.

Camping has changed. It's modernised.
We still like traditional camping with campfire entertainment. Unfortunately, that's not possible at many campsites.
Then there's the modern family camping where you can make your tent a home from home. For example, you can sleep <Link href="/reviews/outwell-laguna-hills-l/">in raised beds</Link> <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-16/">with mattresses</Link> (ours are more comfortable than our bed at home!), furniture, carpet, and even an electric kettle and <Link href="/reviews/outwell-grimsby-induction-hob/">induction hob</Link>!
Now, there's another addition: an in-tent movie night!

### The Outwell Movie Screen

Outwell sent us over their movie screen to review.

We already had a projector that we could stream downloaded movies (<a href="https://amzn.to/3Q233WD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">we have this projector from Amazon</a>, though there are plenty of <a href="https://amzn.to/3tbwn3h" target="_blank" rel="noopener">similar mini projectors</a> available). We'd used it before projecting it onto the side of the tent. So would the Outwell Movie screen improve on that?

### Unpacking and Assembling

First off, the Outwell Movie Screen comes in its little bag. And yes, it is tiny at about 50 cm long and so easy to pack and take without taking up much space.
When first unpacking, you will find the main projector cloth, a bag with a cord to attach to your tent, and a smaller bag with metal poles.
The screen uses Outwell's technical cotton tent fabric but two fabrics to make it thick.
The front of the fabric is a light grey colour. On the reverse side is a thick black material. I understand this is to help get a better-projected image.

The two metal poles go together like regular tent poles.

One pole has closed end caps. This pole slides into the sleeve at the bottom of the projector to help keep the screen weighted down.
The second pole has a cord running through it, which goes into the top sleeve of the projector.
I found this a little tight to push through. The top sleeve could do with being a bit larger to make sliding the pole plus cord through.
Once through, you can tie off the plastic cord length adjustment mechanism and attach the hook.
Although the movie screen works with <Link href="/camping/more-outwell-camping-accessories-for-2021/">Outwell's HookTrack system</Link>, we found we didn't need it and could attach the screen to loops on both sides of our tent. The attachments should make it easy to use the Outwell Movie Screen on many tents, not just those from Outwell.

## Review: Is the Outwell Movie Screen Any Good?

Once attached, it looked like the business.
Thankfully, as the movie is widescreen, the Outwell logo doesn't appear in it.

The projected image was good. But as with all projectors, a lot better in the dark with the lights off.

The screen still had creases, which distorted the image slightly in those places. These creases should disappear in time.
Overall, very impressed with it.
We couldn't have a campfire where we stayed, so we used this twice during our week-long camp.

## Packing Away

With the cord length adjustors tied, there was no way to easily pull the top pole back through the sleeve, without having to untie them and re-tie them next time. If I had left the attached and pulled them through, it would have been challenging to push them back through the narrow sleeve the next time.

Given that Outwell supplies a separate bag for the poles, I guess that is how you are supposed to put it away: disassemble everything.
So, I tried a different approach ;-)
Use this at your own risk, as it might not be the correct way of putting it away!
With the poles still inside the movie screen, I pulled them apart.
At the point when the poles came apart, I folded the screen.
Once folded over, I rolled up the screen with the poles still inside, which fitted perfectly inside the screen's bag.

Job done.
When I use it next time, I unroll, click the poles back into place, and hang it up.

The Outwell Movie Screen provides another option for entertaining the family in your tent, either at night or when the weather isn't too good.


The Outwell Movie screen is a great addition to your camping set-up and gives you another option for entertaining the family at night or if the weather is bad. Of course, you'll need to buy a project too, and be pitched with an electric hook-up.

Unless you go camping without camping facilities, you might think a portable shower isn't necessary. And yes, the portable showers with a bag hanging in a tree produce mixed results.

Don't dismiss this because you think you don't need a shower. It is also a portable hose, which can be a handy addition for the active outdoor family.

### How does it work?

With the power bank charged, you connect it to the pump unit and drop the pump into a bucket of water.

In this test, I used a Colapz Utility Bag filled with water.

### And as a shower?

Well, yes, and it does work well as a shower too. :-)

Of course, you might want to warm the water first by letting it sit in the sun or by adding some water you heat from your camping stove.

A few years back, I mentioned the idea to Outwell of creating an inflatable shelter. I thought this would be a quick way for families who don't like pitching tarps or tent extensions to have an easy-to-use additional shelter when camping.

This year, Outwell introduced such a shelter, and it's called the Outwell Air Shelter, and they agreed to send me a sample to review :-)

## Pitching the Outwell Vale Air Shelter

Pitching the Outwell Vale Air shelter is very simple.
<ol>
<li>Peg out the legs. 
There is a strap to keep the Air Shelter square. You peg out each corner of this square.</li>
<li>Inflate. 
There are two inflation valves. To inflate, you only need to use one. Just make sure the other valve is closed before you start inflating.</li>
<li>Secure with the guylines. 
This is especially important if there's a breeze.</li>
</ol>

## Sidewalls

The Outwell Vale Air doesn't come with sidewalls. These are optional extras.

There is a model that does: the <a href="https://www.outwell.com/en-gb/ecommerce/tents/vale-air-shelter-deluxe-new" rel="noopener noreferrer">Outwell Vale Air Deluxe</a>.

A sidewall pack has two walls, which should be sufficient for most situations.

We did find there weren't enough pegs in the sidewall pack to peg out both walls.

## Deflating the Shelter

Deflation and packing away are simple.

<ol>
<li>Detach the sidewalls and unpeg the guy lines.</li>
<li>Open both air valves and let the shelter deflate.</li>
<li>Roll it up and put it back in the bag.</li>
</ol>

## Verdict

I like the Outwell Vale Air shelter. It does what it is supposed to.

Apart from not having enough pegs for the sidewalls, it also appears to be good quality.

The downside, though, is the price. This is a very expensive shelter and as someone fine with <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/how-to-keep-the-rain-off-using-a-camping-tarp-kit/">putting up a tarp</Link>, it is not something I would personally buy at this price.

I still think the idea of an inflatable shelter is an easy-to-use solution but it comes at a price.

## Update 2023

This zip-on tent connector is a new extra item you can purchase for the Outwell Air Shetler. It creates a dry tunnel to walk straight from your tent into the Air Shelter.

I saw the new Outwell Power Peg in the Outwell catalogue. £10 for a set of four looked like a useful addition to anyone's camping kit for when they needed an extra deep ground anchor, so I asked Outwell for a sample to review, and they agreed :-)

## So, what is the Outwell Power Peg?

Well, they are a large screw that's just over 30 cm, in the Outwell luminous colour.
To get the pegs into the ground, you screw them in rather than hammer. The Power Pegs come with an adapter to screw them in by hand or an adapter to use with a cordless drill.

## Using the Power Peg

Screwing the Power Peg into the ground was quite easy, but not where there was stones. These are best in ground that isn't that rocky.
Once I had screwed the Power Peg in deep enough, it was very secure.

Despite being embedded well into the ground, removing the Power Peg was easy enough with the adapter to unscrew it.

I have discussed before about the usefulness of having a camping tarp in your kit, and <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/how-to-keep-the-rain-off-using-a-camping-tarp-kit/">have these video instructions on how to put up a tarp</Link>.
Well, being a bit if a tarp fan, I was really impressed when I saw this Vango Family Shelter. It's basically one large tarp that you put over the front of your tent.

Now I've not got my hands on one yet to try it myself, but from the details and looks, it will be a really good addition to any family camping kit.
There's only one pole too, with the rest of the tarp structure supported by the tent.
It's a similar price to other tarp kits and includes the pole, for ease of use and looks, this is worth considering IMHO. It's certainly cheaper and more flexible than a tent awning. I see no reason why you couldn't pitch this over a side door of the tent if you prefer.
The pole is supplied and can be extended to a height of 220 cm.
The material is also fire retardant, so it makes a great shelter for cooking under.

We've been converts to inflatable tents for years now: they save so much time pitching, especially for larger tents.

However, there's no denying that you can sometimes work up a bit of a sweat pumping your tent by hand.

Although technically nothing stops you from using an electric pump, this approach has had a few problems.

<ol>
<li>The pump you use to inflate your airbed probably isn't powerful enough to inflate a large family tent.</li>
<li>There's a danger of over-inflating the tubes in your tent with an electric pump.</li>
</ol>

However, this new pump from <a href="http://www.outwell.com/en/Products/camping-accessories/pumps/wind-gust-tent-pump-12v" rel="noopener">Outwell</a>, called the *Wind Gust*, has been specifically designed for inflating tents. It's powerful enough to inflate the air tubes, and it has an automatic cut-off when the correct inflation pressure is reached.

## Using the Outwell Wind Gust Pump

The Wind Gust pump has a 12V adapter so you can use it with your car; you don't need an electric hookup to use it.
At the other end of the pump is a very sturdy tube, hinting at the sort of pressures this pump can inflating things too.

Operating the Wind Gust is very straightforward.

After connecting it to your car's 12V power supply, you use the first button to set the units. PSI or BAR, for example.

You then use the plus and minus buttons to set the desired inflation pressure.

Then you press the power button, and the pump whirs to life.

It's not quiet, and it bounces around a bit as it tries to inflate, but it made easy work of the Easy Camp Tempest 500 inflatable tent we tested it on.

When it starts pumping, the display resets to zero. This isn't a fault. It displays the pressure in the air tubes, so as the pressure builds, the numbers on the display change until the desired pressure is reached. Then the Wind Gust automatically turns itself off.


They recommend that the pump not run for more than 20 minutes as it will overheat, and they advise running it just for 10 minutes.

This wasn't a problem on the tent we were inflating; we only needed a few minutes.

## Not Just for Tents

Of course, other delicate items that need pressure but not too much are also ideal candidates for being inflated with the Outwell Wind Gust.
We tried it on two inflatable canoes, and it worked a treat, getting them both to the right pressure without the usual ten minutes of pumping by hand.

## Verdict

This high-spec pump is designed to safely inflate your tents without destroying your investment. You naturally have to pay a higher price for such a high-spec device than regular 12V pumps.

We've found that the Outwell Wind Gust does the job well and is very easy to use. So, it gets the thumbs up from us.

What Knot

The What Knot Review

Don't you know your double-figure-of-eight knot from a granny knot? Or you just need a simple way to attach rope without the risk of accident from overstretched bungees? This might be an answer to the problem...

The What Knot (also known as the Super Rope Cinch) is a simple but clever little gadget that you may find useful for all sorts of camping and outdoor activities, from putting up a tarp shelter, to securing extra loads on roof bars.
We give it a try in this video where we use the What Knot to put up a tarp shelter.

It works quite simply.
<ul>
<li>Twist the What Knot to open up a hole that you can pass a rope through.</li>
<li>Twist the What Knot shut and it will lock into place around the rope.</li>
</ul>
The What Knot has a locking mechanism, so it won't come undone unless you release the lock.

## Pro's and Con's of the What Knot

I found the What Knot a good sturdy product. Yes, it's made from plastic, but the plastic is thick and strong, with no obvious bending when I put a lot of pressure on it.
They are also a good size for a larger thickness of rope though perhaps a little thick when we were using with smaller paracord.
Using them was straightforward, with a simple twist of the What Knot.
In our test of using it to secure paracord around a tree, I personally would have found it easier using a knot....but then someone who isn't so confident with knots would have found the What Knot much easier. :-)
I can also see the What Not being useful when securing loads, where you might not have sufficient length of rope for a decent knot. In that situation, the What Knot could easily fasten rope together.

When getting outdoors it's good to unplug and switch off.
However, there's no denying the usefulness of today's mobile phones. Not only as a means of contacting rescue in an emergency, but also some of the navigational apps.
For example, we often use <Link href="/family-hiking/what-is-geocaching/">Geocaching</Link> as it is a great way to engage kids and encourage them to walk further to find the next 'hidden treasure'.
The downside with mobile phones is that their battery doesn't last for ever. You can <Link href="/family-hiking/charging-your-phone-outside/">take power banks to ensure you have enough power in an emergency</Link>, but what about using the sun's energy too? After all, solar panels today don't need bright sunlight to generate power.

## Not enough sun and how to get around it

The problems we found was that the Xenta solar panel would only produce enough power with good direct sunlight and the panel angled correctly.
That was a bit of a disappointment since many photovoltaics don't require full sunlight to provide power, but I suppose the effectiveness of the solar panels have been compromised here for a lightweight solution that you an carry in your backpack.
When charging an iPhone, the phone detected when the power dropped and was insufficient. This would typically happen as soon as a cloud covered the sun. At that point the iPhone 5 would say that the device was unsupported and would no longer charge from it even when the sun re-appeared.
The iPhone 5 is doing a good thing here by protecting itself from potentially harmful devices, but it doesn't help when you want to charge your phone and you don't have glorious sunshine in a clear blue sky. And days like those you could probably count on one hand here in the UK! ;-)
The solution, and our recommended way of using this solar charger, is to use it in conjunction with a USB power bank.

We used one from Go Travel that can charge both phones and tablets.
You simply connect the power bank to the solar panel and leave it in the pouch behind the panel. If the amount of sunlight drops the power bank will pause charging but resume as soon as the power level increases.
Once your power bank is charged you can then use that to charge both phones and tablets - something you can't do with the solar panel itself.

Using the sun sounds like a good way to charge your phone when outdoors. But does it work? We test out the Xenta backpack solar charger.

Powering up your tent

Electric Hook-Up points are appearing on more and more campsites these days.
Hooking up and getting electricity in your tent is straightforward.

## 7 Steps to Getting Electric in your Tent

We show you how easy it is to get electricity in your tent.
We're using the Outwell Mains 3 way Roller Kit (more details below), but the process is the same regardless of what electric supply you use.

<li>Make sure everything is unplugged for added safety. If you're just setting up your tent, you probably have nothing plugged in any way:-)</li>
<li>Unroll all of the cable. This is another safety measure to make sure the cable doesn't overheat.</li>
<li>Pass your electrical cord through the cord outlet in your tent (or the door if you don't have one).</li>
<li>Plug into your pitch's Electrical Hook Up.</li>
<li>Turn the EHU's circuit breaker on. (Make sure it's yours and that you don't turn off your neighbour's electricity!)</li>
<li>Turn on the power on your electric unit's circuit breaker.</li>
<li>Plug in and use.</li>
</ol>

## Special Considerations

OK, so it's quite easy getting power into your tent, but you can't just plug anything in.
You have limited Amps on the circuit that is powering your tent. That means electrical appliances that consume a lot of power aren't going to work and will trip the electrics (and on some campsites, that could even mean tripping the electrics out on a whole block of tents, and you may have to pay a charge to get them to reset).

## The Outwell Mains Roller

There are a number of mains supplies you can get for your tent.
The most important thing when choosing one is to make sure they are designed for the job and meet the IP44 standard.
I know you know, but I'm going to say it anyway: *Electrical accidents can be fatal*.
One thing you may find is that you soon run out of power sockets, especially with the amount of phone and device chargers the average family carries around with them these days.
The Outwell Mains Roller - the one with the light and USB - solves that problem.

Not only do you get three power sockets, but you also get two USB sockets, which provide enough power to even charge larger tablet computers like iPads.
It also has a built-in light, saving you another socket from being used up.
This light can be used in full brightness mode or just as a nightlight, which is handy if you have small kids that don't like the dark.
It also stands upright to keep the power sockets away from the floor...as tent floors can get wet...and it has a built-in circuit breaker for added protection.

It may be a bit more pricey than basic Electric Hookup power units, but it's worth it for the extra convenience of the light and USB chargers.

The only problem with this roller was that the rubber cap over the light switch had come off after a few uses. Not a great problem, but I would have expected it to stay on.  We also had to use an extension when we pitched at a site where the EHU was quite away from the pitch.

The <a title="Visit Delta Ground Anchors website" href="http://www.deltagroundanchors.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Delta Ground Anchors</a> have been taking the camping world by storm.  (...or rather, protecting the camping world from a storm!).

This simple design secures the peg into the ground, gripping the earth to secure your tent or awning in place.



I have been using these great pegs to secure windbreaks and tarps, when normal wire tent pegs just aren't up to the job.



The only down side is that most people need to also get the Delta peg removal tool as the pegs are secure too well!



As well as providing additional security, another great design feature of the Delta Peg is that it is flush with the ground.  This should help prevent any nasty injuries if you have kids running around, especially if they are barefoot.



## But aren't they just plastic?


The Delta tent pegs are actually constructed from a plastic composite made with nylon, and have been tested by the University of Exeter to with stand forces of up to 72kg.  That's a strong peg! And it won't corrode.



We haven't broken one yet (even when using a metal mallet!)

The Coleman Classic awning is something that I've been recommending people look at when they can't find an awning or extension for their tent.
This awning from Coleman can fit pretty much any tent.
Yes, it isn't a fully enclosed awning, but it does provide a very simple way to add a rain-safe shelter and entrance to your tent.
Put a few windbreaks around the sides, and you can have an enclosed sheltered area to sit under.

## Pitching the Coleman Classic Awning

The concept behind the Classic Awning is very straightforward. However, it is a large amount of material with a lot of guylines, and so there are a few steps to make it easier.

### 1 - Layout the Awning

Lay the Classic Awning out flat in front of where you want it to go.
There is a black strip of material that goes at the front.
After you have put the awning away the first time, you may find the guy lines tangled the next time you get it out. It is worth untangling any guylines before you start pitching.

### 2 - Get the Guy Lines over the Tent

The guy lines at the back of the awning must go over your tent. There are two ways you can do this.
*Option 1* - try and throw the guy line over the top of the tent. This can have mixed results! (Though I do like doing it!)
It's best if you have someone else to catch the line.

*Option 2* - gather the lines up, keeping in the correct order, and walk them around the back of your tent, pulling them over the top of your tent when you get around the other side.
This method depends on the size and shape of your tent. It can be more successful than throwing the lines over, but if your tent's shape makes it difficult to ease the lines over the roof of your tent as you walk around the back, it's not going to be easy.

### 3 - Put the Tent Pole in the Front

With the guy lines secured around the back of your tent, slide in the tent pole into the black sleeve at the front of the Classic Awning.
Then, slot the metal pins into the bottom of the pole to bend it into an arch.
This is another part where two pairs of hands are better than one.

The black straps have buckles on to adjust the tension. I recommend you loosen these before putting in the pins, then tighten the straps to the desired width and height after the pins are in and you've formed the arch.

### 4 - Peg the rest out

Starting with the guy lines at the front of the awning, peg the rest of it out.

Outwell Inlayz Carpet

A tent carpet is more than just decoration; a well-insulated carpet can make your tent feel much warmer as it provides vital ground insulation.

A place where you want ground insulation is in the tent's bedrooms. Unfortunately, many tent carpets, such as those from Outwell and other brands, only cover the tent's living space and not the bedroom.

I can understand why, since the tent's carpet can't roll into the bedrooms as the bedrooms are on a different groundsheet, floating above the main tent groundsheet. However, I've always thought it odd that there's no carpet where you need the most insulation.

We've always added extra blankets and rugs in the bedroom as it makes such a difference, especially when it is colder.

Fortunately, Outwell has now addressed the bedroom with their new Inlayzzz carpet.

## Inlayzzz - Helping make your tent bedroom cosy

If you've never tried insulating your tent's bedroom, I urge you to try it. It will make a big difference, especially in the cooler times of the year, especially if you use an air bed.

The cold ground can make the air in your airbed cold, which can make you cold. A cold air bed on a warm body can also cause condensation on the air bed where you are sleeping. If this gets into your sleeping bag, you'll be cold and damp, even if you have a well-insulated sleeping bag.

Outwell has addressed this by making the Inlayzzz available to fit many tent bedrooms (and not just Outwell tent bedrooms if the size is right), but Outwell has made this bedroom carpet extra insulated.

Unlike normal tent carpets that roll up, the Inlayzzz carpet has foam panels, providing excellent ground insulation (an *R-Value of 1.5*, to be precise).

The top of the Outwell Inlayzzz isn't as plush as some other Outwell tent carpets, but it has that fleecy-fabric feel and is noticeably warmer and softer underfoot than the tent's floor.

Of course, you don't need this carpet, and if you have insulated picnic rugs and other travel rugs, you can make a big difference to your tent. The foam kids' play mats that slot together can also work well.

However, if you don't want to 'make-do' and want good ground insulation in your bedroom that feels like a carpet - and matches your main carpet if you have an Outwell tent - then this is an item you want to consider to improve your camping experience.

Making your tent's bedrooms warm and comfortable is a must for a great family camping experience. The Outwell Inlayzzz can help with that.

Outwell Hurricane Pump Review

We’ve tried a few electric pumps over the years. Some of these pumps also have the ability to deflate items.

Apart from occasionally using a pump to get the air completely out of things, the ability to deflate has been quite an underused feature. Until now that is.

## Introducing the Outwell Hurricane Pump

The Hurricane pump from Outwell is quite a small little pump that packs quite a punch.

That’s not surprising, as unlike many other pumps that you might take camping to inflate things like air beds, this pump uses a 3-pin mains plug rather than your 12V supply from your car’s cigarette lighter.

That does limit the use of this pump unless you have Electric Hook-up or you are in a caravan, as we were when we tested this pump.

As pumps go, this inflates airbeds quickly.  Quickly. The difference compared to a 12V electric pump is quite astonishing.

## But it’s not just a pump

As you might have guessed by now (the name gives it away), this pump is not just a pump. It’s also a vacuum cleaner!
This is a really clever use of the deflate facility, with a special attachment that collects dust and muck that you vacuum up.
The Outwell Hurricane pump could help clean up those muddy footprints on your tent carpet, and is really useful in a caravan too!

Just like when using the Hurricane as a pump, the vacuum cleaner is quite powerful for such a little device. We were really surprised at just how much it had picked up when we emptied it out.
It did get quite hot but never cut out.
The only downside we’ve found with this so far is that the cable is only about 1m long. Unless you have an electric hook-up with a long cable that you can move around your tent, you are limited to how far you can reach with the vacuum cleaner.
We certainly found this to be the case in the caravan, as there are only so many 3 pin sockets, and there's only one by the floor.

The other issue we found was that the hose would occasionally get a kink in it. I don't know if this was due to the amount of vacuum it generated or the heat of the device. It didn't stop it working, but it was something else to keep an eye on.
Despite those minor issues, the Outwell Hurricane Vacuum Pump still proved to be a handy bit of kit.

The Outwell Hurricane is an interesting design. It's both a pump and a vacuum cleaner in one little package. We give it a try.

## Fly Paper for Kids (and Grown-ups!)

When we first tested this heated carpet, the weather wasn't cold, but it wasn't always warm.

It was easy to find the kids as they would be lying on the heated carpet, not wanting to move from it.

The carpet puts out a gentle heat that is more noticeable when you put pressure on the carpet, such as when you stand or sit on it.


I found the heat much nicer than a fan heater, which can dry out the air. It's a real luxury in your tent.


## Where to put it

Outwell demonstrated the heated carpet outside the bedrooms, providing a warm place to stand. Outwell have warnings about not overlapping the carpet to prevent it from overheating.


 We placed it outside the bedrooms and the living space. It certainly makes a cosy place to sit.

We did try placing some of the carpet under the bedrooms. This provided some warmth underfoot in the bedrooms, but it wasn't noticeable that it provided much warmth to the bedrooms. However, I didn't put much of the carpet under the bedrooms for safety reasons, and it wasn't too cold anyway.


The carpets come in a couple of sizes, so you'll need to work out what usable space you'd have in your tent.

We have also used it in a smaller 3-person tent, where the carpet covered the entire sleeping area. We tried sleeping on top of it. It was great at warming the sleeping bags up, but we soon got too hot! Perhaps it would be different in winter.

## Verdict

If you want to glam up your tent and extend your camping season from Spring through to October, this is another item to put on your shopping list. 


It creates a much more pleasant environment than fan heaters, which dry the air.

## The problem with too much gear

Have you ever been to the beach under a mountain of gear?
We've not been the only ones trying to drag a pushchair across the sand with just about everything possible hanging from the handles.

On a <Link title="Ca’Savio Campsite, Near Venice, Italy" href="/camping/campsites/campsites-abroad/italy/adriatic/casavio-campsite-near-venice-italy/">campsite in Italy a few years ago</Link> we hired a 'rumble truck'. Although designed to pull small kids along, it was mainly used by everyone to ferry gear to the beach. It made life so much easier, and on the flat, the kids could even pull it along.

## How do you get all that gear to the beach?

We've appeared to developed an annual pilgrimage to North Cornwall to sample the local waves.
Once again we find ourselves with too much stuff: bodyboards, wet suits, windbreak/shelter, something to sit on, picnic, etc., etc., etc.!
A little trolley truck would help a lot.

## How do you get drinking water back to your tent? How do you carry the campfire logs?

When camping too there's lots of things to carry.
Water bottles are heavy when full, and carrying a lot of logs is just plain awkward sometimes.
Plus, they're usually too heavy for most people in the family.
Hmm....if only we had a useful trolley.

## How do you get your camping gear to a pitch when cars aren't allowed?

There's a few fantastic campsites that don't allow you to park next to your tent. In fact, no vehicles are allowed in the camping field at all.
These can be great places for kids. You know that they can run around without someone 'not looking' when driving their car.
Unfortunately, family camping usually means a lot of camping gear. The thought of transporting it all by hand is not good.
Some campsites offer an old wheel barrow (yes, we been given the same barrow that was used to muck out stables), and some even charge for transporting your gear to your pitch.
Your own trolley would be useful here too.

## How do you get your canoeing gear to the water's edge?

Even with the <Link title="Sevylor Hudson Inflatable Kayak – Great for Families" href="/water/sevylor-hudson-inflatable-kayak/">inflatable canoes</Link> we use, there's still a lot of gear to get to the water. Sometimes you have to park quite some distance from where you put in.
There's the inflatable canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids, dry bags with essentials in (e.g. emergency and picnic!).
A trolley would be useful here too, saving on the amount of trips you need to make to and from the car.

## The Outwell Transporter is even useful at Air Shows

We also found the Outwell Transporter useful at an air show, and so many people commented on how it was such a great idea.
Often at these events you may have to park some way from where all the action is, and you'll need to setup someone to sit a bit closer (plus you'll often need protection from wind, rain, and sun). The Outwell Transporter was the perfect item to take in the car to solve this problem.

I'm sure you can think of plenty more times a trolley would be useful.
Fortunately for us, we've started using a solution to this problem....

The Outwell Transporter folds up into its own little carry case.
I've found that this fits into the car boot or roof box, and although space can be tight when the car is full of camping gear, we've found it really useful when we have taken it.

It unfolds in seconds, simply by pushing down in the middle.
Folding it up is just as simple by pulling up on a strap in the middle of the transporter.
When folded the Outwell Transporter is 3ocm x 19 cm x 79 cm and weighs around 12 kilos.

## Using the Outwell Transporter

It has nice big wheels, and so it is really easy to move around on uneven ground across a campsite or other places where there's no tarmac.
Our kids found no problems at all pulling it along. They like pulling the trolley along, so makes it easier to share out the chores.

## Our review rating of the Outwell Transporter

Whilst a trolley is not an essential bit of kit, this has been one of those items that's made life a little bit easier. It's a good design and made well too, and gets the thumbs up from us.

If you've been reading our <Link title="The Family Camping Guide" href="/camping/">camping guide</Link> then you'll know that we recommend you should always take a tarp or two (<Link title="The Tarp and Your Tent – Keeping Dry When Camping" href="/camping/camping-tips/the-tarp-tent/">see this guide to creating a tarp shelter</Link>).
With a tarp, you can create a shelter that keeps the rain off, and usually an ideal place to site your camp's kitchen.
If you don't fancy getting all the bits and setting up your tarp shelter, there are <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/how-to-keep-the-rain-off-using-a-camping-tarp-kit/">many tarp kits available</Link> to make the job easier.
After several years, some of our tarp poles needed replacing, and the tarps were starting to look a bit worn. I started looking for a tarp kit to replace all the bits in one go and came across the High Peak range of tarps.

## The High Peak Tarp Kit

The High Peak tarps come in different sizes. I bought the High Peak Tarp 2 from Amazon (<a title="High Peak Tarp 2 on Amazon" href="http://amzn.to/2pk28Eh" rel="noopener noreferrer">you can find it here</a>).

The High Peak Tarp 2 is a 4m x 4m tarp, and so it's quite large, despite arriving in this small carry case.

Inside the kit, you get the tarp, two poles, and pegs. Guy lines are already secured to the tarp.
The tarp itself is lightweight polyester and has a <Link title="What is Hydrostatic Head? We explain" href="/family-tents/hydrostatic-head/" rel="noopener noreferrer">hydrostatic head</Link> of 1000mm.
The guy line points are re-enforced, and it appears to be good quality.

## Using the Tarp Kit

Having a tarp that measures 4m x 4m creates quite a large shelter.
I thought that would be a good size to accommodate a large kitchen area plus enough space for sitting if it was raining.
Normally with a tarp of that size, I would run a line between the two poles (a bit like a washing line) and drape the tarp over the top. This stops large taps sagging in the middle.  However, with just using the kit contents there are no spare guy lines for configuring your shelter in this way, so if you buy a tarp as large as this, expect it to sag a bit.
We found that to get the best use out of it was to add a further 3 (sometimes 4) poles.
Fortunately, we have two new poles for a canopy that came with our <Link title="Outwell Hornet XL Review – Simplifying Family Camping" href="/camping/tents/outwell-hornet-xl/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Outwell Hornet XL</Link>, as well as some poles from our previous tarp setup.
As you can see from the pictures below, this creates a good set-up for a camp kitchen.

## Tips on Pitching the High Peak Tarp

The High Peak Tarp can be pitched in a number of configurations. The simplest approach is to locate the re-enforced eyelet that has two guy lines running from it. You will find one on two opposite sides of the tarp.
It's these eyelets with the double guy lines where you insert the spike on the poles.
You then run the guy lines to in opposing directions, and you've got most of the tarp up.
Sound's simple (and is).
The only thing is, we've now got an inflatable Outwell tent that goes up in a couple of minutes. If you don't have helpers, setting up the tarp can take considerably longer than putting up the large family tent ;-)

## Tarp Performance

We've taken the High Peak Tarp 2 on a couple of camping trips, each lasting a few days, and we've been very pleased with it.
It has survived both wind and rain, and not tore nor leaked.
I did take it down when a storm got up (tent pegs had started to fly), and it's worked great.
Tip: You don't always need to put it away if a storm gets up. The wind may pass, and you'll want to get the tarp up again. Instead, you can lay the poles flat on the ground, then peg the tarp to the ground through its eyelets, avoiding gaps where the wind can get underneath the tarp.
This is what we did, and the tarp remained in place as weather protection for the kitchen underneath.  Of course, it will depend on your particular weather conditions.
When the weather passes, take out the additional pegs you put through the eyelets, and re-insert the poles.
