As with many big camping brands, Robens also now has a large, comfortable, self-inflating mat in its range: the <a href="https://www.robens.de/en-gb/shop/outdoor-sleeping-gear/mats/self-inflating-mats/sunstone-80" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Robens Sunstone 80</a>, an 8-cm deep mat, and the <a href="https://www.robens.de/en-gb/shop/outdoor-sleeping-gear/mats/self-inflating-mats/sunstone-120" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Robens Sunstone 120</a>, a 12-cm deep mat.  Both of these mats come in a double and single version.

We take a closer look at the single Robens Sunstone 120.

## The Air Highway

As you would expect from Robens, rather than create a self-inflating mat like other brands, Robens has brought some new innovative thinking to the problem.

There's no doubt that these large inflating mats are extremely comfortable, but they have a downside: they can be quite large to transport due to all the foam inside. Plus, they may not self-inflate that well.

Robens introduced what they call the Robens Air Highway. Rather than the regular chambers found inside SIMs, the Air Highway gets air faster to parts of the mat compared to traditional designs. This includes chambers in both directions. The result: faster inflation and deflation *and* reduced pack size.

The pack size is reportedly 76 cm wide by 23 cm thick.  That's extremely good for a large 12 cm deep SIM.

## Improved Mat Sides

Robens has also worked on re-designing the sides of the SIM.

You'll find that the fabric on the sides of large mats is stretchable. This is the same stretchable fabric used to make the top and bottom of the mats. As you inflate normal mats, the sides stretch, requiring more air to make the mat rigid.

Robens has designed a new manufacturing technique to make the sides with a non-stretchable fabric. This has not been possible until now.

This means the Robens Sunstone requires less air to make it rigid than regular large SIMs.

## Well Insulated

Replacing more foam with air didn't make the bag any less comfortable when I tried it, nor has it reduced its insulation rating.

The Robens Sunstone 120 has been verified to have an R-Value of 6.8. What does that mean? Well, insulation from -30°C! I don't expect I'll be camping in the UK if the ground reaches that temperature ;-)

This will provide comfort and warmth for camping, and remember, a common reason for waking cold at night is that there isn't sufficient insulation underneath.  The Robens Sunstone 120 will prevent that.

## Self-Inflation

So if this pack is small yet still comfortable and well-insulated, does it pass the self-inflation test?

Well, the answer is yes! I am extremely impressed at how easily this mat inflates itself.

If you want the mat firmer, you might want to blow a little more air in, but most of the work has been done for you.

It's also quick and easy to deflate, especially with the Robens Peak Valve, which can let air in and out quickly.

## Verdict

As with any high-spec kit, it does come with a higher-end price tag. However, compared to other similar-sized mats, such as the <Link href="/reviews/vango-shangri-la-15-grande/">Vango Shangri-La</Link> or <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-16/">the Outwell Dreamboat</Link>, it's in a similar price range. So that's not bad given all the additional features, such as the higher insulation rating, convenient smaller pack size, and both fast inflation and deflation.

The Robens Sunstone 120 is a well-insulated and comfortable self-inflating mat that does actually self inflate.

For most family camping, I would recommend getting a large and comfortable self-inflating mat, like t<Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-2019/">he Outwell Dreamboat</Link>.
When your kids are young, getting away camping is a great adventure. And while they still mike like the car camping as they get older, you do have the opportunity to take on new adventures together, such as <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/backpacking-with-kids/">backpacking</Link> or bikepacking.
For this type of camping, small, compact, lightweight gear is essential.
I was impressed with the lightweight camping gear that Robens showed me, such as this Robens Air Impact 25 SIM. It's just the sort of thing to pack down small in your bag.  And fortunately, they agreed to send me one to review :-D

## Air Impact 25 - Small Pack

The essential part of this type of Self-Inflating Mat is how small and lightweight it goes, and the Robens Air Impact 25 doesn't disappoint there.

This isn't going to take up a lot of space in my bag, <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/backpacking-with-kids/">unlike some mats I tried last year from Vango.</Link>

## Small Size, Good Specs

Despite the small size, this mat still has some great specs.

You won't find your fiddly typical SIM valve on the Robens Air Impact 25. It uses the Robens Peak Valve, a diaphram valve that makes it easier to inflate and deflate.

We have some older hiking SIMs that are a little smaller when inflated, but take a lot more blowing to inflate them. 
I was really surprised at how few puffs it took to get the bag inflated (and if you don't like blowing into it, you can get a bag pump from Robens too).

## Mat Construction and Comfort

Inside the mat, it is a mix of foam and air-core chambers. This helps keep the insulation good and the weight down.

I found these air cores gave the sleeping mat a lot of support when combined with the foam, I was surprised how comfortable this 2.5 cm thick mat is. Laying on my side, I didn't feel the hard ground on my hip, nor on my elbow, so the mat was giving me plenty of support.

So far I'm giving this the Thumbs Up. Next plan is to take it Bike-Packing. I'll update this review when I've tested it some more.

We've reviewed the <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-2019/">7.5 cm Outwell Dreamboat before</Link>, as well as the <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-double/">much older double Outwell Dreamboat we bought many years ago</Link>.

The Outwell Dreamboat has always been an extremely comfortable self-inflating mat. The 7.5 cm Dreamboat shone <Link href="/camping/the-big-camping-mat-comparison-thermarest-v-vango-v-outwell/">when compared to even deeper mats from other brands</Link>.

Well, this year, 2020, Outwell have brought out an even deeper version at 16 cm. And luckily, they agreed to send us one to review. :-)

## Comfort First

We want all families to enjoy camping. But if you have someone in your family who thinks camping is roughing it and refuses to go, you might try convincing them with a great sleeping mat. At least, get them to try it at home first as we did <a href="https://youtu.be/b3n5fNyVPyE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">in the video.</a>

So let's look at the new 16 cm Dreamboat from the view of non-campers who think sleeping when camping is either too cold or hot or on a hard floor that gives them backache.

### Keeping you warm

While you can get sleeping bags to keep you warm at night, people generally get cold when sleeping in a tent due to the ground. The ground in the UK is cold, and if you don't have enough insulation, the cold ground can suck the heat out of your body.

Many campers use an inflatable air bed, but at night, the cold ground chills the air inside the bed, making them cold. Have you ever woken up in the early hours feeling cold? This could be why.

So how does the Outwell Dreamboat keep you warm?

First, the Dreamboat has insulating foam within that 16 cm of depth. But, for cold weather, the mat has extra insulation on one side to keep you warm, so make sure you have the cold symbol on the side you sleep on.

For those who want the technical details, this cold side has an R-Value of 5.1. The Outwell Dreamboat has been independently tested to keep the average female comfortable down to -16C!!

By the way, they test the rating for women, as ladies tend to feel the cold more.

### But not too warm

Another complaint from a non-camper who has experienced camping on warm summer nights might be that it gets too hot to sleep.

Well, turn the Outwell Dreamboat over so that the warm symbol is on the top.

When the bed is this way around, there is less insulation next to your body, plus the built-in air tubes are closer to the surface in summer mode. Remember the cooling effect of air beds? Well, Outwell has used that on this side of the mat to help take the excess heat away from your body.

### Comfort

Comfort is very subjective. Some people like firmer beds; others softer. No one likes the cold, hard, lumpy floor of the campsite.

Well, with 16 cm depth, that's ***not*** going to be an issue. The princess from the *Princess and the Pea* children's story would get a good night's sleep if she'd had this 16 cm Outwell Dreamboat ;-)

What's more, you can make the bed firmer or softer by adjusting the air in it.

### But can I use the Outwell Dreamboat on a campbed?

Yes, if you have the right camp bed.

With the mattress on a bed, you are up off the ground. For some, this makes getting in and out of bed much easier.

And this does make camping feel like sleeping at home.

You need to have the correct size bed for this very large self-inflating mat and ensure the mat is secured to the bed.

We tried it on the large <Link href="/reviews/outwell-laguna-hills-l/">Outwell Laguna Hills L folding camp bed</Link>, which is the correct size for this mat, plus the bed has elastic straps to hold the mat in place.

## The Practicalities


### 16 cm Outwell Dreamboat Pack Size

OK, so the 16 cm Outwell Dreamboat is comfortable, warm or cool, and can make it feel like sleeping at home. But how big is it when folded? Will it even fit in my car?

Testing the previous <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-2019/">7.5 cm Outwell Dreamboat</Link>, especially <Link href="/camping/the-big-camping-mat-comparison-thermarest-v-vango-v-outwell/">when compared to other brands</Link>, I was impressed with how small the pack size was. Yes, it's still larger than very small back-packing SIMs, but this mat is for family camping with a car or van, not back-packing.

With 16 cm of insulation, the pack size is larger but smaller than you might think. Officially, it's 81 cm long with a 25 cm diameter when folded. That's good for a mat of this size.

However, after the first time, I rolled it back up, the diameter was more like 30 cm. But leaving the valves in deflate mode could squash down a little further.

### Inflating - does it self-inflate?

Despite these types of mats being called self-inflating, they rarely do.

I leave the valves open, put the mat in the tent's bedroom, and leave it until later. I've found that this 16 cm mat inflates itself quite well, better than the 7.5 cm Dreamboat.

I can leave the mat, set up the rest of the tent, and return later to top up the air to make it firmer.

If you want your self-inflating mats to self-inflate more, store them unrolled with the valves open. Keeping them under your bed is great if you have the space.

### Is it easy to roll up?

Yes, it is. <a href="https://youtu.be/b3n5fNyVPyE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">See our video above</a> or <a href="https://youtu.be/675Wt4hNA4g" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Outwell's video below</a>.

Set the valves to deflate, give the mattress some gentle folds to expel the air, and then roll it up from the opposite end to the valves.

## Verdict

Well, as you may have guessed by now, I *love* this SIM :-D

Now the downside: it is relatively expensive compared to airbeds and smaller SIMs, which is unsurprising given how much deeper this is. However, it's a similar price to other large SIMs, and if you shop around, you can get it much cheaper than the RRP of £262.

Yes, Outwell sent us this one to review, so we didn't pay for it (yay!). However, we did buy the <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-double/">double Dreamboat before</Link>, so it is something we'd invest in and recommend.

We consider it a great upgrade to our camping kit.

This gets the Thumbs Up award.

Vango kindly sent us a couple of their Dreamer Self-Inflating Mats (SIMs) to test out while we try non-car camping adventures, such as bike packing and backpacking.

These are the single Vango Dreamer SIMs that are 3cm thick and weigh less than a kilo (0.89kg, to be precise).

We've used these SIMs several times now, including by our daughter on her Duke of Edinburgh expedition, but I wanted to try them myself in what they were intended for: backpacking or bikepacking.

You immediately notice from the photo above that although they are lightweight, they are not small when rolled up, and take up a similar amount of space as a rolled-up foam mat. Maybe a little less, but they were too big to fit in my backpack.

Being such small self-inflating mats, I wasn't expecting them to magically self-inflate. Very few mats that call themselves self-inflating inflate themselves, we found.

After leaving the SIMs, I blew air into them to get them properly inflated.

These use standard SIM valves, and not the large inflate/deflate valve that you can find on the massive <Link href="/reviews/vango-shangri-la-15-grande/">Vango Shangri-La Grande sleeping mat</Link>.

The thickness of 3cm may not sound like a lot, but it's about twice the amount you get on a foam roll mat. So, despite taking a similar sort of space to carry, you get a more comfortable sleeping mat.

Although this is firmer to lay on than the thicker sleeping mats, I didn't find it too hard.

<a href="https://www.vango.co.uk/es/sleeping-mats/551-dreamer-3-single.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vango state</a> that the mat contains open cell foam insulation to provide additional warmth.

## Verdict

Don't expect a luxury mattress or a SIM that magically self-inflates. That's near impossible in a mat designed to be lightweight for backpacking.

This SIM is good at being lightweight, simple, and does the job. Yes, I'd like it smaller when packed as I haven't worked out how to fit it on the bike for bike-packing.

It also did well on the D of E, which is also what it's designed for. So, we're happy to give it the Thumbs Up award.

A few years ago, <Link href="/reviews/outwell-dreamboat-double/">we bought an Outwell Dreamboat</Link>. At the time, this was one of the most comfortable self-inflating mats that I had ever tried.

And it still is. Our Outwell Dreamboat has been used on hundreds of camping trips and is still in good condition.

However, a few years later, and, as you would expect, the design of this self-inflating mat has been further improved.

I was impressed when I saw the new Outwell Dreamboat, and fortunately, Outwell agreed to send me one to review.

## Size

The first thing you notice with the new Outwell Dreamboat is the size when it’s packed. It now takes up much less space.

We were sent a 7.5 cm thick single Dreamboat, so not the thickest version. However, compared to similar-sized SIMs, this was a much tighter packing than before. Would it be this small, though, after I packed it away?

## Inflating

The Outwell Dreamboat now includes the new air valves we reviewed last year.

These valves help with inflating and deflating the SIM.
Simply switch to inflate, and let the bag start to inflate.

## Did it self-inflate?

Well, not completely.

This was the first time I had tried inflating the self-inflating mat, and so to be expected. Manufacturers recommend that you keep self-inflating mats unrolled at home, storing them flat. This will help the mat self-inflate when you next use it, as the mat will want to return to it’s inflated state.

Unfortunately, this mat had been rolled up tight since the factory, so it didn’t have that ‘memory’ to re-inflate.

After leaving the mat for some time, it didn’t completely self-inflate. Fortunately, with the air valves, it’s easy to blow in to add more air. This is not ideal, as it gets moisture inside the mat, which can turn to mould.

Storing the mat flat at home with the valves open can help the mat dry out.

## Size when inflated

When inflated, the Outwell Dreamboat is a good size.

We compared it with another SIM, a 10 cm SIM from Thermarest, and the ‘smaller’ Outwell Dreamboat was wider and, although just 7.5 cm, appeared to be the same height as the 10 cm SIM.

## Insulation

Another neat trick of the Outwell Dreamboat is its Summer and Winter mode.

When the Winter symbol shows, the mat is insulated to help keep you warmer when the weather is cold.

When the Summer symbol shows, the mat can help cool you down on warm summer nights.

## Comfort

The Outwell Dreamboat is super comfortable. Even the 7.5 cm mat provides plenty of support and doesn’t make the ground hard.

## Deflating the Outwell Dreamboat

So, it's a good size, insulated, and comfortable. How easily does the Dreamboat roll up?

Well, that wasn't a problem, either!

## Conclusion

So, what's our verdict?

Well, we really like this sleeping mat from what we've tested so far. Yes, it is very expensive, but if you plan on camping for many nights, either in one go or several camping trips throughout the year, this might be worth the money for a better night's sleep.

It gets the thumbs up from us.

Large Self Inflating Mats, or SIMs, are gradually replacing the air bed as the camper's choice if you don't have room for a camp bed.
Getting them to be self-inflating and easy to put away. Vango has tried to address this with their new self-inflating mat, the Vango Shangri-La 15 Grande.

## The Shangri-La Grande SIM

The Shangri-La Grande lives up to its name: this is a big mat, 76 cm wide and 200 cm long.

That extra thickness makes this **one of the most comfortable SIMs we've tried**.

## Inflating and Deflating the Mat

This mat does self-inflate.
Despite this type of sleeping mat being called a self-inflating mat, many of the bigger mats have difficulty inflating themselves.
However, the Shangri-la Grande did do exactly that.
It's not instant. You'll need to leave it some minutes. But it does get there.
You might need to blow in some air though if you want a firmer mattress. But we found, with all the extra foam in this mat, that it was just fine after it was given enough time to inflate.

Vango's new valve design really helped with deflation, and I got the air out without the mat wanting to re-inflate.
Now, this is a big camping mat to roll up. Vango provides a couple of compression straps to keep the bag together after you have rolled it up.

## Verdict

This is a very comfy mat to sleep on. It inflates itself, and deflation is much easier with the special valve design.

The only downside is that the Shangri-la Grande is still a large mat when deflated, so check you have the space to transport these to the campsite.

It gets the thumbs up from us.

The Vango Shangri-La 15 Grande is a comfortable sleeping mat for camping. It will feel much more like a bed at home.

Getting a good night's sleep always makes camping a lot better.

We've covered ways to <Link href="/camping/camping-tips/sleeping-setup/"> set up your sleeping area for best results</Link>, but getting a good mat to sleep on really helps.

The top-of-the-range sleeping mat from Outwell is their Dreamboat.

I saw this when it first came out and was very impressed. So, last year, I bought one from Camping World.

## The Dreamboat - A closer look

The Outwell Dreamboat is a part foam mattress and part self-inflating mat. They've taken concepts from both to make an incredibly comfortable mattress for family camping.

Inside the Dreamboat are hollow channels within the foam that gets inflated, turning it from a roll into a mattress.

You can adjust the air in the mattress to make it softer or firmer.

## Inflating the Dreamboat

Being a 'self-inflating' mat, the dreamboat should, of course, inflate itself. And true, if you open the valves on the Dreamboat and leave it for 5-10 minutes, it will be much more inflated.

But, as with just about all self-inflating mats, they usually don't get there by themselves. You'll need to blow some air in to get that little more air.

The Dreamboat has a one-way valve with a smiley face on it. Just put some gentle blows in there to adjust how firm or soft you want.

## The Outwell Dreamboat vs. An Airbed

We've all used the Dreamboat in our family and voted it much better than any airbed we've tried. Even the large Vango Airhead we recently tried.

It's also much warmer than an airbed, especially in cooler temperatures.

Airbeds can get quite cold as the air inside them cools down.

With the Outwell Dreamboat, all the foam inside the mat keeps it much warmer. I don't think Outwell have published any insulation figures, but we have used it in the winter months, and it still works well.


## The Outwell Dreamboat vs Outwell Dreamcatcher

Another Outwell SIM we have been using for a few years is the Outwell Dreamcatcher.

The Dreamcatcher is much more like your traditional SIM, though a lot thicker and more comfortable than small thin SIMs.

The Dreamboat has much more padding and insulation, making it more comfortable than the Dreamcatcher.

## Deflating the Dreamboat and rolling it up

As with any SIM, there's a technique for putting it away. After all, SIMs keep trying to re-inflate themselves.

Here's how we roll up the Double Dreamboat mat.
<ol>
<li>Open both valves</li>
<li>Fold the airbed in half down the middle, making it a single size, and then lean on it to start getting the air out. Then, fold it in half again, and lean on it to get the air out.</li>
<li>Unfold the last fold, but keep it folded down the middle. This keeps it the right size to get back into its bag.</li>
<li>The valves start rolling it in a tight bundle from the opposite end. You may need to pause to force more air out of your bundle. If you have a little person, getting them to lie on the unrolled part of the mat helps keep it from re-inflating too much.</li>
<li>By the time you have rolled it up, a lot of air will have been forced out. However, it still might not be enough to get it back in its bag. Just quickly unroll it and reroll it. It won't take long as most of the air is out, but this second roll can get the bundle nice and tight.</li>
<li>Use the elastic straps that came with the Outwell Dreamboat to secure it and keep the bundle together. Put it back in its bag.</li>
</ol>

Simple ;-)

## Storing the Dreamboat

The official guidance, as with any other SIM, is to store them unfolded with the valves open.

This helps them keep their shape and prevents mould from building up inside.

One of the best places is to keep your SIMs unrolled under your bed.

It is recommended to store the Outwell Dreamboat unrolled, though we've been using it so often that we've not done so :-|


## The Dreamboat, after nearly two summers

I've lost count of the places we've taken our Outwell Dreamboat. We take it whenever possible, whether sleeping in a big tent or just using a little tent.

Although it's not as clean as when we first got it, the Outwell Dreamboat performs just as well as when we bought it.

There are all sorts of things that can keep you awake at night when camping: windy weather, noisy neighbours, and of course, snoring!
But the one thing that can really irritate most people, is an uncomfortable bed.
We've had air beds for years, and then got some <Link title="Self Inflating Mats, and What’s Recommended for Family Camping" href="/camping/self-inflating-mats/">Self Inflating Mats</Link> (SIMs) for the kids.
The problem with air beds is that they can be bulky and bouncy - especially a double. If your partner moves, then so do you!
The SIMs are a great invention. They save time setting up camp as well.
The downside with SIMs is that they're really aimed at the backpacking market, so they're small at light. Being able to pack something small is of greater importance than comfort.
Fortunately this does't apply to most family campers, as we take the car (<Link title="Should you get a Trailer or Roof Box? Getting your gear to the campsite" href="/camping/camping-tips/roof-box-trailer/">and roofbox, and trailer</Link>). So, what we want is something that is easy to put up like a SIM, but more comfortable than the regular backpacking SIM.
Enter Outwell's new range of Self Inflating Mats: the Dreamboat, the Deepsleep, and the Dreamcatcher. I saw these when they were first unveiled at the Outwell trade show, and was extremely impressed. They looked a lot better than other brands' SIMs that were coming onto the market.
As they're not intended for backpacking, Outwell have made these SIMs a lot more comfortable.
Outwell sent us a 7 cm Outwell Dreamcatcher to review. You can also get it as a 5cm and a 10cm thickness mat.

## Outwell Dreamcatcher Review

The Outwell Dreamcatcher comes rolled up in a carry bag, which is a lot bigger than the previous SIMs we've had before, but it's not too big, and is an easy size to pack.

### Inflating

Outwell do provide some instructions and advise that as the mat has been rolled up since manufacture, the first time you inflate, you will need to gently blow into the valve to help it on its way. This is usual on *self* inflating mats; you often have to give them a little blow.
Sure enough, after leaving the mat for a few minutes it was clear that it needed some help. Quite a bit actually, but I was not as out of breath as when blowing up balloons.
Once inflated the Outwell Dreamcatcher is very firm. In fact, Outwell also advise that you may wish to let some air out if you want a softer bed.
They also recommend that the Dreamcatcher is left inflated for a while on its first use, in order to let the foam expand. So if you're going to get one (and I recommend that you do), inflate it at home first before you take it to the campsite.

### A sound night's sleep

The sleeping mat was very comfortable to sleep on. It didn't deflate either overnight.
Two of us have now tried the Dreamcatcher, and we both think it's better than the air bed, and better than the old (thiner) SIMs.


### How to roll up an Outwell Dreamcatcher

Putting the Outwell Dreamcatcher away is straightforward.

It has two valves so that you can get the air out quicker.
Here's the steps for putting away the Dreamcatcher:
<ul>
<li>Open both valves.</li>
<li>Start to roll up the SIM from the opposite end to the valves.</li>
<li>Keep the roll nice and tight, and push down to force the air out. If it doesn't look that tight, unroll a bit and re-roll. You'll find it easier the second time as you would have got rid of a lot of air.</li>
<li>When you get to the valves, tighten them up.</li>
<li>Use the velcro straps to keep the roll together and slide it into its bag.</li>
</ul>


## Our opinion?

Update 2015: We have been using the Outwell Dreamcatcher for the last year and it's still going as good as new.
This self inflating mat is a great alternative to air beds and a lot more comfortable than most smaller backpacking SIMs.
It gets the thumbs up from us :-)

When we started family camping all those years ago, the only real option for sleeping was the airbed.
Fortunately, camping technology has moved on somewhat. We've been really impressed with the family camping Self-Inflating Mats from Outwell, as they are both comfortable and provide good ground insulation - something air beds can't do.
However, a lot of people find it difficult to get all the air out of the mats before putting them away, and this is especially the case for the larger family camping SIMs.
Well, Outwell has developed another innovation, the Outwell Air Flow Control Valve, making inflating and deflating self-inflating mats much easier.

## The Outwell Air Flow Control Valve

The Outwell Air Flow Control Valve is a great bit of design, and much easier to use than the traditional self-inflating mat valves.
Switch the valve to the middle position, and air can flow in and out of the SIM. You leave one valve in this position to let the mat self-inflate.
Then, simply switch it so that it says 'Airtight' and the valve will let air in but not out. You can even blow into the valve when it is set to 'Airtight' to make the mat firmer.
To deflate, well, it's pretty obvious: you simply switch the valve to 'Deflate'. Now it will let the air out, but not in.
This makes it so much easier to pack away self-inflating mats with this valve. With traditional valves, the mat would be trying to reinflate itself as you tried to put it away. Not anymore for SIMs that have the Air Flow Control Valve.

## Using the Valve on the Outwell Deepsleep Double

Outwell sent us over an Outwell Deepsleep Double SIM to put the valve to the test.

The Outwell Deepsleep is very comfortable self-inflating mat. This one is 7.5cm thick, has a brushed fabric top, and an R-Value of 7.7.

If you use this SIM with the new <Link href="/camping/using-the-outwell-inlayzzz-carpet-to-make-your-tent-bedrooms-snug/">Outwell Inlayzzz bedroom carpet</Link>, as shown in the picture, which has an R-Value of 1-1, you are going to have a much warmer night when the weather turns cooler.

## How to fold up the Outwell Deepsleep

Here are some simple steps to getting the Outwell Deepsleep back into its bag.
First, switch the Outwell Air Flow Control Valves to Deflate.

Then, fold the Outwell Deepsleep in half, making the width of a single SIM.

Gradually fold the SIM to get the air out. Use your weight to help it deflate quicker.

Unfold the SIM but keep it folded down the centre. You now need to roll up the Deepsleep SIM, starting at the end of the SIM that doesn't have the valves.

Grab the compression straps and secure them around your rolled-up SIM.

Finally, pop it in the bag.

SIMs can provide a much better night's sleep than air beds, but you might find them difficult to put away. Now there's a solution to that problem.

Therm-a-rest is a brand synonymous with great Self Inflating Mats that provide fantastic insulation.

So, naturally, I was elated when they decided to send me their <a href="https://www.thermarest.com/ie/catalog/product/view/id/16576/s/mondoking-3d/category/13/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MondoKing™ 3D SIM</a>.

Therm-a-rest sent over their larger version of the MondoKing 3D, which is perfect for our camping, which we mainly do with the car.

As with most SIMs, the Therm-a-rest MondoKing 3D SIM has two valves at the top for inflating and deflating.


> you should let it unroll at home first

I hadn't unrolled it before taking it on our early February camp. This is not the most sensible thing to do of course, as you should let it unroll at home first, as it can take a while to inflate after being packed for so long ;-)
However, after leaving it some considerable time, and giving it a few puffs of air, I had the MondoKing inflated.

## A good sized SIM

Certainly, this SIM is a good size. It had plenty of room even if I rolled around a bit in my four-season sleeping bag, plus it was quite thick. Almost a few inches when inflated. (10cms is the official specs)
This is the largest Self-Inflating Mat that Therm-a-rest currently make.

## Another Point of View

Shell also has spent time sleeping on the MondoKing 3D.


> I found the SIM to be very comfortable and plush. It didn’t feel like you were sleeping on the ground.

One of the best SIMs I have tried. It's also nice and quiet, so it doesn't wake you when you turn over at night. It's much better than a cheap one.


## Keeping me warm

The R-value of this SIM is 11.4.


> should be good enough down to -40C

According to the specs, this should be good enough down to -40C. Though I wasn't going to test that was the case!

Using it in early February with a 4-season sleeping bag, I didn't feel the cold, despite a frost outside.

I had put down a poncho insulation quilt on the tent floor, so with the additional R-Value of this SIM, it was doing the job quite well.

## Rolling up the Mondo King

Putting SIMs away, especially large ones, can take a while, as a lot of air is needed to get out of the valves at the top.
The Mondo King 3D was no different.

Unlike other SIMs, this didn't have any compression straps to keep it rolled up. However, I didn't find this a problem, as it stayed together well once the air valves were closed, and I placed it back into its stuff sack.

## Verdict


I've only used this once so far on a cold winter camp, and I've been very impressed with this Thermarest SIM.

It gets the Thumbs Up from us.

## UPDATE

So we've been using the Thermarest MondoKing 3D for the past year. I like this SIM.

It's comfortable. It's warm. And it's reliable.

The only downside is that it is harder to pack up than the new 'smart' valves on SIMs from Outwell and Vango. But that's only a minor niggle.

It's taken a lot of punishment over this last year, with both kids and the dog in the tent. And it's still going strong.

This SIM is an investment but is still recommended.

We test out the Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D SIM on a cold winter camp.
