Not far from the town of Porthmadog in North Wales is Haven's Greenacres Holiday Park, right next to the large sandy beaches of Black Rock Sands.

Stay in one of the many static caravan models, or bring your own caravan or motorhome and stay in the touring area (but note, there are no tent pitches at Greenacres). 

The park also has a heated indoor pool and outdoor splash zone, as well as nature activities, bowling, arcardeds, and entertainment, as well as the Mash and Barrel pub and Papa Johns pizza.

Gwynedd

Black Rock Sands Camping and Touring Park is nestled behind the sand dunes right next to Black Rock Sands beach, with direct access to the beach from the campsite.

Shell Island is off the coast of North Wales and is only accessible during low-tide over a causeway.  It's one of the largest campsites in the UK.

Note that caravans cannot stay at Shell Island, and there is no Electric Hook-up, though they can charge leisure batteries.
Phone charging is available in the Shop (for a fee).

Dinas Caravan Park is a small friendly site with only 8 static caravans, 30 camping pitches and two glamping bell tents tucked away in the foothills of the Rhinog mountains but just over three miles to some fabulous beaches.

Kids love the tree swings; building dens in the woods or dams in the stream, cycling around the campsite and along the quiet lane to a large Lake at the end of the valley. We also have a Canadian canoe for hire on our small lake or you may bring your own inflatable.

Campers usually pitch around the perimeter of the upper field leaving a large open space in the middle for ball games, flying kites or throwing a frisbee. Parents can join in or watch their children enjoying the freedom, fresh air and open space.

A walk to the top of The Rock is a must-do or take advantage of our walking leaflets to Peacock farm, Nantcol waterfalls, the Pub walk to Llanbedr village and the Ice cream walk to Harlech. There is a fantastic choice of days out from spending the day collecting shells and building sandcastles at a choice of glorious sandy beaches or visiting Harlech Castle just three miles away and much, much more.

Dinas Caravan Park

Nantcol Waterfalls has seven acres of flat camping pitches right next to the river, with waterfalls just a short walk up from the campsite. 
As well as camping, glamping and cottages are available.

The Beddgelert Campsite is nestled among the trees just outside the village of Beddgelert in the heart of Snowdonia - just a ten-minute drive to Mount Snowdon.

Aberafon campsite sits on the North Wales coast on the Llyn Peninsula, between Caernarfon and Pwllheli, with direct access to the beach.

Note: Due to restricted access, Aberafon campsite cannot accommodate  Caravans or Motorhomes over 7.5 Metres.

This route starts at the Pen-y-pass carpark. 

Two routes start from the Pen-y-pass car park. The Miner's Track and <Link href="/routes/gwynedd-the-pyg-track-up-mount-snowdon/">the Pyg Track</Link>. 
If you stand in the car park and turn away from the road so you face the mountains, then the Miner's track is the route on the left. 

Unlike the Pyg Track, which starts to climb straight away, the Miner's track eases you in gently as you walk around lakes and past old mine works. 
However, the Minor's track has a sting in its tail: as you get to the end and approach the summit, you have quite a brutal climb up. 

For this reason, I prefer to climb up Snowdon via the Pyg Track, and then descend via the Miner's track. 

Be aware that the car park at Pen-y-pass fills up quickly and is quite expensive. However, there is alternative parking (see our notes on <Link href="/routes/gwynedd-the-pyg-track-up-mount-snowdon/">the Pyg Track</Link> for more details).

The Miner's Route up Snowdon

You start on the Pyg Track from the Pen-y-Pass car park. 
As you stand in the car park and face the mountain, the Pyg Track is the route on the right. (The one on the left is the Minor's path). 

The Pen-y-pass car park gets full early. It's also quite expensive to park there. 
However, there's an alternate car park further down the road, which was £5 all day when we parked there (April 17).
You will need to bring coins for the parking meter. 

A bus runs from this alternate car park (£1 a child; £1.50 an adult). However, this only runs at certain times and only every hour. 
Alternatively, there are usually taxis available. It cost us £8 to get to Pen-y-pass, only a little more than the bus ticket for all of us, and we didn't have to hang around waiting.

We have walked the Pyg track a few times, and I prefer it to ascend over the Minor's track, as you get to take in some magnificent views as you climb. 
The Pyg Track is a steady climb all the way. The Miner's track is a more shallow gradient until the end, where you then have a brutal climb to the summit. 

Be prepared for the mountain weather. Although this track is well marked, there are some areas that could be difficult to pick through when in a thick cloud, and very slippy when wet (and frozen). 

There are many (read MANY) steps cut into the rock on this route. However, some of these steps are quite big. 
As you get higher up the mountain, the steps disappear, and you have to scramble over some boulders. 

If the weather is good, this is a path that families take. You'll see many kids walking this route. 

Take it steady, check the mountain forecast, and be prepared.
