**The Accommodation**
The Shepherd's hut, settled on top of the slope, gives you far-reaching views across the valley. 

Inside, the hut has electricity (supplied by photovoltaic panels) & lights - along with a double deluxe mattress for a perfect night's sleep. It is well insulated & has a wood-burning stove for all year round toastiness. Self-inflating mattress can be supplied for one child.

**Tents**
Tents can be pitched only by those guests staying in the Shepherd's Hut. If there are more than 3 of you wanting to stay feel free to bring yours.

**Kitchen**
Fully equipped kitchen (incl. gas hob & fridge) with crockery and cutlery for 6.
Or cast yourself back into a simpler age & cook around the kotlich and fire. 

**Things to do**
Children can explore the 3.5-acre site with rucksacks that we provide packed with ideas and equipment. They can also go pond dipping, play on swings, hide in willow dens or build their own (plenty of materials cunningly placed for discovery!). There are maps and games in the hut.

Please note, as the Shepherd's Hut is at the top of the slope (only 2 mins but steep) it would be difficult to get a pushchair up... 

Lots in the area for families to do - paintballing and high ropes at Oaker Wood Leisure, furry creatures at Small Breeds Animal Park and indoor fun at Quackers to name a few...

Adult bikes are available for hire.

Deep in the North Herefordshire countryside is a gem of a small campsite known as The Buzzards.
There are also cottages available.

Clun Castle Keep

The ancient village of Clun is in the deep rural heart of England, just by the border with Wales.


This is the place for lazy summer afternoon picnics.


If you are staying nearby, or it's only a slight detour on a journey to somewhere else, then it's well worth a visit.



## Clun

The village of Clun is as old (or older) than the 9th-century castle that overlooks it.  It still has a very old (and narrow) bridge at its heart.


During summer, the river is shallow enough to find many children paddling while parents sit in the sun from the grassy banks.


Right next to the bridge is the castle car park, which also has some public loos and resident ducks.

You cross the river via a footbridge from the car park to get to the castle.


If cows aren't grazing, the meadow provides an excellent place for a picnic.

The castle is now just a ruin, but considering how old it is, that's not all that surprising.


You climb up a series of ramparts and hills to get to the castle.  The <a title="Information on Clun Castle" href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/clun-castle/history-and-research/" target="_blank">English Heritage</a> information board part way up (near the bowling green) provides a very good description of what all these layers were.


Originally a Normal Motte and Bailey castle, it would have been very impressive in its time, with several levels and gatehouses. However, the large impressive keep was a later addition and more of a house than a true fortified castle.


Anyone studying Motte and Bailey castles at school would find it a visit useful.

This isn't an action-packed day out.  This isn't an expensive attraction either (admission = free).


However, it's a great place for a picnic, for the kids to explore, paddle in the stream, get ice cream, and see something special from the past.

Clun Castle

A family Glamping getaway at Cosy Under Canvas is a unique opportunity for grown-ups to relax around the campfire, while the children's imaginations run wild through the woods. And the family dog is most welcome too!

The woodland part of our site has two Cosy domes and three Spacious Domes. Ash and Willow, Holly, Oak and Beech. They share a large kitchen and have access to the Cosy Corner for additional seating.
The streamside area has two Spacious domes, Hazel and Rowan, that share their own kitchen.
All of the domes have their own private compost loos and shared shower facilities.

The spacious domes sleep up to 6, the cosy domes up to 4. Ideal for group gatherings of families or friends. We can provide travel cots, high chairs and fireguards for children free of charge.

There’s something to keep everyone entertained on-site whatever their age, from the grandparents to the little ones. From Stream dipping and pooh sticks to den building and willow weaving, there's an adventure to be had, campfires to be lit and plenty of time to relax. Children will enjoy following the trail around the site to the feely boxes, swings and den and using the activity book for ideas of woodland games to play. If you fancy something more sedate there's colouring for kids and adults, boules and cards to play, or get creative with the crafty bits and bobs in the Cosy Corner.

There's plenty of seating for everyone and the large spaces around the fire pits mean that campfire cooking is a must. All chip in with prep and dig into a one-pot stew or prepare a BBQ feast to enjoy whilst snuggling up in cosy Welsh blankets, warming your toes on the fire. And don't forget the marshmallows!

There are lots of activities in the area and we can recommend local companies who can arrange a package to suit all abilities and levels from thrill-seekers to the more sedate. To make life really easy some activities are available on site. Try a guided group bike ride, a leisurely canoe down the River Wye, a stroll through the local countryside or a hike up the highest mountain in South Wales, Pen Y Fan.
Or for total relaxation borrow a book, lie in the hammock and chill.

For those who feel they are a little too long in the tooth for Family Glamping or just don't fancy it, there are numerous B&B's to choose from in Hay on Wye. Do get in touch for more information.

Cosy Under Canvas

Monstay is a working farm set in the beautiful countryside of Shropshire, just outside the medieval town of Ludlow.

There are some excellent forest walks near the campsite, and if get up early enough, there's a good chance of spotting the wild deer.

If you don't fancy camping, there's also a shepherd's hut you can hire.

Berrington Hall in Herefordshire is another great day out, with lots to do for families, an excellent place for picnics, and for the kids to roam.

Fforest Fields is a family-oriented campsite that spans seven acres and set in beautiful countryside at the heart of mid-Wales near the town of Builth Wells.

The site is nestled in a rural valley surrounded by rolling hills. Lakes, woodlands, and moorlands are all available to explore from the site.

This cycle route starts and finishes at Fforest Fields campsite in mid-Wales. 
It circumnavigates the big hill that overlooks the campsite (which can also walk up).

Fforest Fields is a great campsite. You can sit around and enjoy the view, or get out and active (or do both!).
Overlooking the campsite is a hill, with trails for walking, running, and mountain biking. 
You can get a route map from campsite's reception or follow along here. 

This route starts off on level ground and goes all the way around the main lake at Fforest Fields, before heading off up the hill. 
Some of the paths can be slippy, rocky, and muddy. This route tackles the steep bit first, heading up above the waterfall, along the hill on the top path, and then back along the hill at the lower path, before meandering through the trees lower on the slope and returning to the big field at the campsite.

When you are at to the top of the hill, make sure you look back down at the campsite and see just how far you've climbed.

Ludlow is a medieval town with a former Royal Palace Castle, now in ruins.  The town is now famous for its food.
