Monstay is a working farm set in the beautiful countryside of Shropshire, just outside the medieval town of Ludlow.

There are some excellent forest walks near the campsite, and if get up early enough, there's a good chance of spotting the wild deer.

If you don't fancy camping, there's also a shepherd's hut you can hire.

Ludlow is a medieval town with a former Royal Palace Castle, now in ruins.  The town is now famous for its food.

Berrington Hall in Herefordshire is another great day out, with lots to do for families, an excellent place for picnics, and for the kids to roam.

Deep in the North Herefordshire countryside is a gem of a small campsite known as The Buzzards.
There are also cottages available.

Clun Castle Keep

The ancient village of Clun is in the deep rural heart of England, just by the border with Wales.


This is the place for lazy summer afternoon picnics.


If you are staying nearby, or it's only a slight detour on a journey to somewhere else, then it's well worth a visit.



## Clun

The village of Clun is as old (or older) than the 9th-century castle that overlooks it.  It still has a very old (and narrow) bridge at its heart.


During summer, the river is shallow enough to find many children paddling while parents sit in the sun from the grassy banks.


Right next to the bridge is the castle car park, which also has some public loos and resident ducks.

You cross the river via a footbridge from the car park to get to the castle.


If cows aren't grazing, the meadow provides an excellent place for a picnic.

The castle is now just a ruin, but considering how old it is, that's not all that surprising.


You climb up a series of ramparts and hills to get to the castle.  The <a title="Information on Clun Castle" href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/clun-castle/history-and-research/" target="_blank">English Heritage</a> information board part way up (near the bowling green) provides a very good description of what all these layers were.


Originally a Normal Motte and Bailey castle, it would have been very impressive in its time, with several levels and gatehouses. However, the large impressive keep was a later addition and more of a house than a true fortified castle.


Anyone studying Motte and Bailey castles at school would find it a visit useful.

This isn't an action-packed day out.  This isn't an expensive attraction either (admission = free).


However, it's a great place for a picnic, for the kids to explore, paddle in the stream, get ice cream, and see something special from the past.

**The Accommodation**
The Shepherd's hut, settled on top of the slope, gives you far-reaching views across the valley. 

Inside, the hut has electricity (supplied by photovoltaic panels) & lights - along with a double deluxe mattress for a perfect night's sleep. It is well insulated & has a wood-burning stove for all year round toastiness. Self-inflating mattress can be supplied for one child.

**Tents**
Tents can be pitched only by those guests staying in the Shepherd's Hut. If there are more than 3 of you wanting to stay feel free to bring yours.

**Kitchen**
Fully equipped kitchen (incl. gas hob & fridge) with crockery and cutlery for 6.
Or cast yourself back into a simpler age & cook around the kotlich and fire. 

**Things to do**
Children can explore the 3.5-acre site with rucksacks that we provide packed with ideas and equipment. They can also go pond dipping, play on swings, hide in willow dens or build their own (plenty of materials cunningly placed for discovery!). There are maps and games in the hut.

Please note, as the Shepherd's Hut is at the top of the slope (only 2 mins but steep) it would be difficult to get a pushchair up... 

Lots in the area for families to do - paintballing and high ropes at Oaker Wood Leisure, furry creatures at Small Breeds Animal Park and indoor fun at Quackers to name a few...

Adult bikes are available for hire.

Wild Meadow

Small Batch Campsite is nestled in the beautiful hills of the Long Mynd in Shropshire. 

It's at the end of a lane in a small village of Little Stretton, and so it's within easy reach of the two pubs in the village. (The closest one has trampolines for the kids in the beer garden).

Just down the road is the larger town of Church Stretton. 

Right from the campsite, you have the beautiful Ashes Hollow valley (a great place for picnics), as well as other walking and mountain biking routes.

Small Batch Campsite

The site itself is actually an untamed ancient orchard that slopes down to woodland and a stream that marks the boundary of our land. You will be camping amongst the wildflowers and the unusual ‘otherworldly’ ant hills that tell us that this land has been undisturbed for centuries.

The opportunities for wildlife ‘safaris’ are endless, from your run of the mill rabbits and more than our fair share of woodland birds to badgers, foxes and muntjac deer roaming around your tent at night, to sightings of fallow deer and buzzards, sparrow hawks and the occasional red kite flying overhead.

We allow campfires, as long as they are off the ground (bring your own fire pit, or you can hire one from us) and we have nets of logs and kindling for sale at our honesty shop, we also sell (amongst other things) locally produced meat for your bbq's (to order) as well as the obligatory marshmallows to toast over the campfire. 

We aim to provide a low impact, sustainable and eco-friendly campsite; it’s a field on a farm, with lots of peace &amp; quiet (although the abundance of wildlife mean that it is anything but quiet), for people who are looking for a real back-to-nature camping experience. Please come and have fun, enjoy a glass of local cider around the campfire but please just be respectful of the other campers and mother nature.

Facilities are basic but comfortable and clean. At the moment, we have 1 composting toilet, 1 gas shower and a covered washing up area. There is no electricity in the campsite and the lighting in the facilities block is solar powered.

The field is a car-free site, which is perfect for families, it’s a short walk from the car park, and we have a fleet of wheelbarrows to ferry your gear. If we're around you may be able to hitch a lift on the quad bike or tractor!

Hidden Valley Camping

Ashes Hollow is a beautiful valley in the Long Mynd, just up from the Small Batch Campsite, in the village of Little Stretton, Shropshire.

The walk starts at the far end of the campsite and you follow the stream that flows through the valley.

The first part of the walk has a flat trail but does have a couple of stiles to climb over.

This is a great place for a picnic on a sunny day. Our kids have loved playing in the stream here.

The upper part of the walk can get a little bit more difficult, with a narrow trail that turns rocky, though there are some stepping stones for the kids to cross.

Parking can be difficult when it is busy. There are two pubs in the village. The one at the crossroads near the start of the walk has a couple of large trampolines for kids to play on.
