Shropshire

The Green Caravan Park is nestled in the South Shropshire Hills and has various places to pitch: two small dingles, the Plateau, The School Hut, The Player Area Field, The Rally Field, and the Island.
It's right next to the small and shallow River East Onny, where children can play and paddle.

Clun Castle Keep



The ancient village of Clun is in the deep rural heart of England, just by the border with Wales.


This is the place for lazy summer afternoon picnics.


If you are staying nearby, or it's only a slight detour on a journey to somewhere else, then it's well worth a visit.



## Clun

The village of Clun is as old (or older) than the 9th-century castle that overlooks it.  It still has a very old (and narrow) bridge at its heart.


During summer, the river is shallow enough to find many children paddling while parents sit in the sun from the grassy banks.


Right next to the bridge is the castle car park, which also has some public loos and resident ducks.

You cross the river via a footbridge from the car park to get to the castle.


If cows aren't grazing, the meadow provides an excellent place for a picnic.

The castle is now just a ruin, but considering how old it is, that's not all that surprising.


You climb up a series of ramparts and hills to get to the castle.  The <a title="Information on Clun Castle" href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/clun-castle/history-and-research/" target="_blank">English Heritage</a> information board part way up (near the bowling green) provides a very good description of what all these layers were.


Originally a Normal Motte and Bailey castle, it would have been very impressive in its time, with several levels and gatehouses. However, the large impressive keep was a later addition and more of a house than a true fortified castle.


Anyone studying Motte and Bailey castles at school would find it a visit useful.

This isn't an action-packed day out.  This isn't an expensive attraction either (admission = free).


However, it's a great place for a picnic, for the kids to explore, paddle in the stream, get ice cream, and see something special from the past.

Ashes Hollow is a beautiful valley in the Long Mynd, just up from the Small Batch Campsite, in the village of Little Stretton, Shropshire.

The walk starts at the far end of the campsite and you follow the stream that flows through the valley.

The first part of the walk has a flat trail but does have a couple of stiles to climb over.

This is a great place for a picnic on a sunny day. Our kids have loved playing in the stream here.

The upper part of the walk can get a little bit more difficult, with a narrow trail that turns rocky, though there are some stepping stones for the kids to cross.

Parking can be difficult when it is busy. There are two pubs in the village. The one at the crossroads near the start of the walk has a couple of large trampolines for kids to play on.

Ashes Hollow Picnic Spot

Brow Farm is nestled in the small village of Ratlinghope, which is nestled in a valley within the Long Mynd hills Shropshire: an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 
Brow Farm is a back-to-basics campsite, with a massive 12-acre camping field, and campfires allowed as long as they are off the ground. 
Although mainly used by tent campers, caravans and motorhomes are welcome, although there are no hardstanding pitches. 
As the campsite is so large, booking isn't required.
Wooden lodges are also available if you don't want to bring your own tent.

Brow Farm in the Shropshire Hills

Small Batch Campsite is nestled in the beautiful hills of the Long Mynd in Shropshire. 

It's at the end of a lane in a small village of Little Stretton, and so it's within easy reach of the two pubs in the village. (The closest one has trampolines for the kids in the beer garden).

Just down the road is the larger town of Church Stretton. 

Right from the campsite, you have the beautiful Ashes Hollow valley (a great place for picnics), as well as other walking and mountain biking routes.

Small Batch Campsite

For this walk, you start off at the National Trust car park at Carding Mill Valley. 
There are two car parks. For this walk, it is best to use the upper car park. 

The walk is going to take you about three hours, depending on how many stops you make.
The first part of the route is quite steep, and this is the steepest part of the whole walk.

Wild Moor Walk

Bodbury Ring is an ancient Iron Age hill fort that overlooks Cardingmill Valley, with good views all the way around. The hill fort is believed to be about 500 years old, though there are much older settlements on the Long Mynd, including the Bronze Age trackway that crosses the top of the Mynd.

This walk goes from the National Trust carpark at Cardingmill Valley (charges apply unless you are a National Trust member). Don't park too far up the carpark, as the walk starts near the entrance.
