Oxfordshire

This is a walk to the famous chalk White Horse on <Link href="/family-hiking/ridgeway-hikes/">the ancient Ridgeway</Link> on the Berkshire Downs and is full of legends and history. You could easily turn this into a magical and mystical walk for the kids :-)

You start the walk at the National Trust Car Park. This car park was a quarry and the stones were used in the buildings of Uffington. Follow the steps up to the hill and turn left up to Uffington Castle.
Don't look out for towers and walls, as Uffington Castle is an ancient hill fort.


#### The White Horse

Carry on round the hill past Uffington Castle and you get to the famous White Horse.  Up close, it won't look much like a horse. 
No one knows why it was built, but it's understood to be about 3000 years old.
PLEASE DON'T STAND ON THE HORSE.


#### Dragon Hill

From Whitehorse Hill, look across to Dragon Hill. 
It's been given this name as the story of George slaying the Dragon is said to have been on that hill, and the white chalk spot on the top of the hill is where the dragon died.

#### Uffington Castle

Follow the path south to <Link href="/family-hiking/ridgeway-hikes/">the Ridgeway</Link>, past the Trig Point. As you pass, you get a closer look at Uffington Castle and you can still see the ramparts.


#### The Ridgeway

Once you reach the Ridgeway, following it to your right, walking down the hill. 
<Link href="/family-hiking/ridgeway-hikes/">The Ridgway is an ancient trackway</Link> that traverses the hills from Buckinghamshire to Wiltshire. <Link href="/family-hiking/ridgeway-hikes/">For more information on the Ridgeway and other walks along it, tap here.</Link>
Carry on along the Ridgeway until you get to Weyland's Smithy.


#### Weyland's Smithy

After descending the hill, you leave the Ridgeway to your right and visit Weyland's Smithy, an ancient Long Barrow burial chamber.
Local legend says it's where an invisible smithy used to live, and if travellers left a silver coin, their horse would get new shoes!

This is the summit of Whitehorse Hill, which is part of the Oxfordshire 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge.

This is the summit of Liddington Castle, which is part of the Swindon 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge.

Liddington Castle is sometimes called Liddington Camp. It's a late bronze age or early iron age hill fort.

This is the summit of Liddington Hill, which is part of the Swindon 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge.
Although this is a high point, there's no trig point or marker to indicate its location.

Barbury Castle is an ancient Iron Age hill fort and is one of several that can be found along <Link href="/family-hiking/ridgeway-hikes/">the ancient Ridgeway walk</Link>.
The modern Ridgeway footpath goes right through Barbury Castle.

This is a really quick and easy walk to do, even if you have young children. 
The hill is within the Barbury Castle Country Park, and there's a car park with toilets. This car park is already most of the way up the hill, and so it's an easy walk up to the old entrance to the castle. 
Once at the top, image what it would have been like to live here in those Iron Age roundhouses. 
You can carry on along the path to the exit at the opposite end, and then walk back between the ancient ramparts, and back to the path that takes you to the car park.

Barbury Castle

This is the summit of Barbury Down, which is part of the Swindon 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge.

Barbury Down - Swindon 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge

Located just a mile from the historic Oxford City Centre, and just off the A34, this campsite is a convenient location for exploring Oxford and the surrounding area.

Oxford Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite

YHA Oxford is close to the city centre and conveniently located next to the railway station.
Private en-suite rooms are available, which are ideal for families.

Oxford Castle has the oldest non-religious towers in the country and was built 1000 years ago to help keep the Vikings out of the city. Then the Normans came and turned the tower into a castle. 
The castle soon turned into a prison, and remained a prison for many eras, finally closing in the mid-1990s.

You can enter the Pitt Rivers Museum through Oxford University's Museum of Natural History.
Both of these museums are free to enter; a voluntary donation is asked for.
