This castle has been guarding this spot of Cumbria for about 900 years. But there's a been fortification here for even longer, as the Romans built a large fort here in AD72.
Mary, the Queen of Scots, was held in a tower at Carlisle Castle. You can visit the tower on your visit, and also King Richard III's bedroom.
Facilities DetailsThere is only registered-disabled parking at the castle. Alternative parking is in the town. Pushchairs are welcome but can be difficult with all the steps. Baby changing facilities are only in the female toilets. Dogs are welcome, but only on the grounds, not in the buildings.
