We were surprised at just how little of Hadrian's Wall still remains. 
Though there are visitor's centres, here's a piece of wall that you can still see, along with the remains of a turret. 
No admission fee is required. You just park in the layby.

Northumberland

Fly through the air over the beautiful Northumberland countryside on a 160-metre zip wire.

At Go Ape in Northumberland, their famous Tree Top Challenge spans 755 metres, 11 metres up, and has 38 treetop crossings – with the longest being 16 metres.

When you’re not up in the tree’s there are 300 acres of parkland to explore, so a great place for an entire day out.

Go Ape at Maften Hall, Northumberland

This walk is directly from the <a href="http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/northumberland/hexham/bellingham" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bellingham Campsite</a> and through the Bellingham village. It takes you over fields to woodland with an ancient Romano-British settlement.
You then return via a path next to the river and back to the Bellingham village.

Note that in the latter parts of the walk there is some walking alongside a road that doesn't have much of a grass verge.

The Riding Wood Walk from Bellingham

Located in the Northumberland National Park and Northumberland International Dark Sky Park – considered to be the most tranquil place in the UK.

Bellingham Campsite

This is a route provided to us by the site managers when we stayed at the <a href="http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/northumberland/hexham/bellingham" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bellingham Camping and Caravanning Club campsite</a>. 
You'll need a couple of hours to do this walk but it should be easily achievable by most families.

You start off at the campsite and then head down to the village of Bellingham, walking alongside the North Tyne river for a while, before cutting through the village and then starting the walk proper.
The walk takes you through a forest. Some of it is paved, but other parts are very muddy if it has been wet. 
You pass a few small waterfalls on the way up the valley, but eventually, you will reach the waterfall, which is quite impressive and not the usual thing you see at the end of the forest walk.
