Positioned right on the Firth of Forth, the Blackness Castle looks like a ship. The castle was built for one of Scotland's most powerful families, the Crichtons, and it was never a peaceful place. It was in use right up until after the first world war and was also a state prison.
Facilities DetailsDogs are allowed on leads, but not allowed on the roofed areas of the castle. A lot of the ground is uneven and with steps, and so not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. This castle was in use right up until after the first world war. As well as being a castle, it was also a state prison.
The Castle is open every day throughout the year. Click the link below for opening times. Members enter the castle for free.
