Greenwood Forest Park, Wales

April 11, 2013

Greenwood Forest Park is an interesting experience.  A bit of a theme park (don’t expect big rides), and a bit of a woodland experience.

Get Out With The Kids rating of Greenwood Forest Park 4 out of 5

Things to do there:

  • The gravity based Green Dragon Roller Coaster (this goes quite fast)
  • Pedal bikes
  • Big bouncy air bags
  • The bare foot walk (this was good fun)
  • Giant slide
  • Adventure Parks
  • Archery
  • Crafts and Theatre

Here are some of the highlights.

Bouncy Pillow

A giant inflatable pillow.

Kids have a great time on this.

Bare Foot Trail

This is an interesting idea and one the kids loved (even during a very cold April!).

You walk around this trail bare foot, treading on different surfaces (including water).

Dragon Roller Coaster

This runs from a top of a hill, down it, and back up again. It is lifted to the top of the hill by the weight of the next riders. How cool is that?

Small children are allowed to ride with an adult (if they reach the height restriction).

Our four-year old was hesitant at first, but loved the ride. We went on it again, and again, and again, and again….

Magic Show

At the theatre when we visited was a kids magic show. This was very entertaining.

The shows run regularly (and a good place to have your sandwiches!)

Watch the kids in Den Building

There is also den making in the woods.  Whilst this is something we’d have fun doing, when we were there it was unsupervised, structures built by previous kids unsafe, and lots of kids crawling all over them.  I’m not a health and safety kill joy, but a large branch came down on my head from high when a kid decided to rob the branches from a previous den.  I also had to help rescue a toddler when a den collapsed on them.  Fortunately only cuts and bruises.  May be something to skip when busy.

There was also an incident when a child died on a zip wire, but I don’t know the details on how that happened.  They immediately removed the zip wire.

…but I don’t want to paint a negative picture because we had an excellent time there and found it a great day out in that part of Wales.

  1. I remember that report of the child dying from falling off the zipwire – it’s good they don’t have it anymore. With the den builds, I would presume it’s operated on a parents-must-supervise basis but they should make this crystal clear by telling any unsupervised children to get out of the den-making area.

    • Hi Hannah,

Yes, the den building is getting quite popular and we’ve seen it at a number of places now.
My kids like it and I’m all for it…if it is done right. It’s important they understand how to do it right though.
Unfortunately there’s no instruction for kids (and adults), so accidents do happen.
