Benthall Hall, Shropshire

Benthall Hall, Brosely, Shropshire

Benthall Hall is a 14th Century house, managed by the National Trust, in the rural Shropshire countryside, not too far from the birthplace of the industrial revolution.

Although managed by the National Trust the home is still in use today by the Benthalls, and as you walk around you can see both old and modern furnishings.

I think this was quite good for the kids as they could relate to a room with a TV, even if the room downstairs had a knight’s armour in the corner.

Easter Egg Trail

We visited Benthall Hall at Easter, and of course did the National Trust’s Easter Egg Trail (£1 per child). This was outside in the garden.

Now on previous Easters we’ve had a warm day and a picnic outside. This easter was cold. So cold, Benthall Hall was under snow. 2 feet or more in places, even after thawing for a few days.

Fortunately the Easter Egg shaped clues in the garden were not white.

Some trails we’ve done in the past have been too easy or too hard. The trail at Benthall hit the balance well.

Each clue had a letter and a puzzle to solved. At the end you rearranged the letter to make a word. (The answer was Easter related. Sometimes the answer is the name of a historic figure associated with the house, which children never get).

At the end, the kids receive an Egg Head Easter Egg from Cadbury.

Worth Visiting?

This is not a big property and two hours is probably the most time you’d spend there.

The staff/volunteers were very good, and explained things to the children, even letting them interact with some items.

If you are in the area, it’s worth popping along for a visit (especially if you have a National Trust family card, which we recommend).
