The Heights of Abraham, Derbyshire

You arrive at The Heights of Abraham via an alpine cable car.

That should give you some idea that it’s high up!

The attraction is located in the small town of Matlock Bath, and you can find the Cable Car terminus a short walk from the train station (you have to cross the train line at a crossing).

As you ascend higher, the views are quite impressive.

The cable car slows down in the middle of its ascent so you can take in the views (don’t worry when it slows to a stop – you haven’t broken down and left dangling hundreds of feet up in the air!).

If you have little ones that are still in pushchairs, you can take them on the cable car, but the chairs must be folded up.

Each car can take a maximum of six people.

Under Ground, Over Ground

Once you get up to the Heights of Abraham, you get to go back down again…but this time underground.

There are two caves to visit.

The Masson Cavern descends deep underground.

There are quite a few steps in the cave.

You get a guided tour that explains the features of the cave…and that a family (named Masson) lived and mined there.

When you exit the cave, you come out at the top of the Heights of Abraham, and a chance to take in the impressive views.

In the Rutland Cavern, you step back in time and experience what it was like as a 17th Century minor. (Unfortunately, we missed this cave on our visit. It’s near the lower play park).

Some things to see and do at the Heights of Abraham

Play Parks, Walks, Fossils, etc.

As well as the caves there are a couple of play parks. One includes two big slides that go down the side of the hill.

There’s also plenty of walks and a fossil exhibition too.

Ice creams are available and there’s also a cafe, though when we visited the cafe was extremely busy with long queues.

If you are bringing your own food, you can find plenty of picnic benches around the place.

Entrance Prices

Under 5s are free with one full paying adult.  Family tickets for 2 adults and 2 children are also available.

For up to date ticket prices and opening times, see the Heights of Abraham website.

Parking for the Heights of Abraham

The main car park is at the Matlock Bath railway station, where the cable car terminus is only a short walk away.

We visited on a weekend in summer and this car park was full.

However, you can find different car parks at both the north and south ends of the village.
