Right at the main beach in Newquay (the one with the ‘island’) is the Blue Reef Aquarium. This is a slightly smaller aquarium than some (see Blue Planet), however it is well put together with lots of very good displays.
There’s local Cornish sea creatures on display, along with those from further afield.
Our favourites were the small crocodile (which you can get up close too), the turtle in the big tank, and the jelly fish… though there are lots of great displays.
The Big Tank
The big tank has the now commonly seen tunnel that you walk through. Slightly smaller than some aquariums, but it is well put together.
Black tipped reef sharks circle above you, along with rays, and our favourite, the giant turtle.
In addition to the tunnel there’s also a large glass viewing platform where the sharks swim by you. This gave a great view of the fish, and I wish many other aquariums had such a well designed large tank.
Here’s the view from the viewing platform.
The giant turtle in the main tank is also a rescue turtle, who is actually blind. Despite years of rehabilitation efforts, he just could not be returned to the wild, and so now swims (and bumps) around in the main tank at Blue Reef Aquarium.
Here’s one of the rescue turtles they named James Bond:
Tickets and Opening Times
The Blue Reef Aquarium is open every day from 10 am until 5pm, or 4pm in the winter.
A family ticket for four (2 adults and 2 children) cost £32.50 or £39.25 with three children. Under 3s are free.
They also have a café with views over the Newquay beach (and serve good portions and a great hot chocolate when we visited).
