Shropshire 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge

Shropshire – England

This is our first local three peaks challenge that we did, and it’s quite easy to do in a weekend or even in an afternoon if you are quick.

There’s a carpark for the Stiperstones hill with a not to long walk to the summit. Similarly, you can drive up to the old quarry and park at Titterstone Clee hill.

Brown Clee hill is a little further to walk, but the route is not too steep.

Beware of bad weather, though. Despite it looking like a normal day at home, when we did it, all three summits had a sub-zero blizzard!

Peak 1: Stiperstones Manstone Rock
536 m

Summit Hint: Trig point is up on the rock. Be careful if climbing to the trig point.

Telford and Wrekin 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge

Shropshire – England

This family hiking challenge centres around the big hill near Telford: the Wrekin.

There is a carpark at the base of the Wrekin (click here for carpark location), and then an easy path to follow up to the summit. If it’s a clear day, you’ll enjoy views across the Shropshire plain, the Long Mynd, Wales, and the Black Country.

You can retrace the path down to the base of the Wrekin for the next summit, or you can take a nice circular walk down the other side and around the Wrekin through the woods.

Once back at the Wrekin carpark, as you face the hill, you can turn left (East) down the lane. You’ll come to a public footpath to Maddock’s Hill.

This is an old quarry and so there are a few cliffs. Not somewhere to let the kids run off.

With all the old quarry digging out the summit of this hill, it’s a little hard to find the real summit, but if you stick to the footpath you’ll get close enough to where the summit once was.

If you fancy a longer hike, you could continue on a circular walk up to the final hill, the Ercall (the Wrekin’s little sister), or you could just retrace your steps back and past the carpark, and take the lane to the right. (Please note that there are no footpaths down these roads).

If you take the footpath opposite the Hotel’s entrance, you’ll follow it up to the summit.

This is a wooded route, and when we’ve walked it before, the footpath can sometimes be obscured by leaf fall, so take a map and compass, or a GPS app like OSMaps – though tree cover could prevent your phone’s GPS working well.

Once again, there is an old quarry, but if you stick to the path through Ercall Wood, you will stay clear of it.

How to Complete the Challenge

  1. Click the button underneath each photo to view the summit on a map. Plan your route to each summit, making sure it is a summit that is suitable for your family.
  2. Try and do all three summits within 24hrs... or a weekend 😉
Track how many miles you walk in doing this challenge.
  3. Get as close to each summit as is safe and legal to do so, then take a group selfie.
  4. Come back to this website and record your 3 Peaks Hiking Challenge result, uploading your three photos and recording your mileage. You'll be added to the hall of fame for the challenge, awarded more Active Family Points, and your mileage might have earned your family a new hiking badge.

Note

The summits on this page are suggestions for your own organised activity and not part of the official Three Peaks Challenges.

Some challenges are easier than others. Some challenges have serious peaks, such as the Munros, and should only be undertaken with the appropriate skills and experience. Remember to only take on the challenges appropriate for your family. The button to view the map for each peak can help you with that planning.

If these challenges have inspired you to take on the official Three Peaks Challenge be sure to visit the official website, where you can also join in on an organised Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge or the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge.
