There are many places up and down the country that do organised canoe trips, with many aimed at families.
These are typically a one way gentle river trip, where you set in up stream, paddle down with the current. You usually stop somewhere for lunch, sometimes a picnic, sometimes a river pub, and then carry on downstream until your final destination, where you will have transport back to the start. Some trips even have steam trains as the return transport.
We’ve done some of these trips and they are very enjoyable.
All kit is provided, as well as some basic instruction and assistance if required.
The canoes are typically large and stable Canadian canoes, though some also provide sit-on-tops.
Those trips that are in coastal regions may not have a regular start time as they will be influenced by the tide, as you may set in as the tide comes in, helping you go up stream, and then float back as the tide goes out.
You can also get activity vouchers for these sort of trips, making them an ideal gift or taking the hassle out of organising. These vouchers are usually for a number of different places up and down the country, so a good choice for seeing who in your family likes the water and who doesn’t before you invest in kit for your own adventures.
