Winding River Canoe

Evening Canoe Paddle with fireside story-telling

Devon

Join us for a magical evening on the River Dart! The evening paddle by canoe is an opportunity to have an unusual evening where you slow down and experience the natural world on the water as it moves from day to night. The fading light… bird-sound, silence, bats, moonlight, darkness. We set off in the daylight and paddle for an hour or so upstream, gathering firewood on the way. Pitching up on the river bank, some hearty soup around the fire, and if our storyteller is on board, a river tale or two. We paddle back as night falls to the sound of the owls, and only our night vision to guide us. No previous canoeing experience required.
“Thank you Winding River for such an excellent evening trip up the dart!
Canoeing back in the twilight with bats skimming the water and owls silently flying by, after food and storytelling around the fire… I couldnt imagine a better way to spend your evening… when’s the next one?” (Joseph – Devon)

Winding River Canoe

canoe safari on the Rier Dart

Devon

We begin from Longmarsh, Totnes, where we set off with the outgoing tide. Leaving the town behind us, we join with the peaceful expanse of the Dart Estuary, with its thick wooded banks, and sparkling water. We follow the gentle meandering of the river as it winds towards the sea at Dartmouth, where the fresh meets the salt. We usually stop for lunch at Dittisham or Stoke Gabriel, where you can find great food in the local pub or cafe (see menus below), or if you prefer, a picnic on the beach. It’s a great spot for children to go crabbing from the jetty. As the tide turns we’ll head back towards Totnes where the trip finishes in the late afternoon/early evening.

We meet at about 9.30am and finish up around 5pm. This may vary slightly depending on the timing of the tides.
