Deer Feeding at Attingham Park and WW2

Throughout the school holidays, Attingham Park (managed by the National Trust) in Shropshire, are feeding their deer at 2 pm.

Even though there is a good walk through the Deer Park at Attingham, the deer are often quite distant.  Well, at feeding time, you can get quite close and a great opportunity for your kids to see a herd of deer.

Attingham Park have also recently opened a new World War 2 walk.

During the 1940's, the house and estate were commissioned for the war, and RAF Atcham was built.

Even though some distance from Europe, the air base did launch some operations but later was turned into a training facility.

When the USA joined the war, RAF Atcham became one of the many bases in Shropshire to be used by the USAAF as a training base, getting US pilots used to the flying conditions in Europe.

Scattered around Attingham Park and the nearby Business Park (built on the main airfield apron), are the remains of that air base, which was also used after the war for families who had lost their homes.

The new WW2 walk takes you further into the Deer Park, which was normally off-limits to the public.  This was a great walk as you show your kids some history, explored the old air raid shelters, and also get quite close to the deer herd.
